Getting stranded on a deserted island was probably something the pirates of yore considered a common occupational hazard. One sudden storm, one malfunctioned cannon, and boom, their ship would be gone and they’d find themselves trapped in the middle of nowhere.

That’s precisely the situation you’ll find yourself in with RetroStyle Games’ new first-person survival game Last Pirate: Survival Island. With nothing save for the hook that you have in the place of your hand – which is honestly more of a liability than anything else – you’ll have to find a way to stay alive in this harsh environment.

Your hook-hand will be the only tool you have at the beginning

Of course, the first things you are going to need are food and water. You can survive on the fruit that you can find here and there for a while, but in the long run, you are going to need meat. That means learning to hunt and fish. You shall also have to acquire at least some basic cooking skills as well, because raw meat will make you sick.

Luckily enough, hunting also provides you with other resources besides meat, namely skin and bones, which you can use to make new tools and weapons. Everything has a very practical feel to it, with a strong focus on coming up with strategies to deal with real-world-like challenges.

And then come the zombies. During your hunting trips you will often encounter some of these walking corpses, but at night, they’ll also have undead skeletons joining them, adding a sense of dread to the cycle of day and night.

Last Pirate: Survival Island probably draws inspiration from some other survival games on PC and consoles like Sea of Thieves and Rust. You can clearly see its console root in the detailed 3D visuals and immersive first-person view. And we’re not complaining. It’s a real treat to see.

Last Pirate: Survival Island is available right now on both Google Play and the App Store for free.
