Horror Movies That Are Based On a True Story (1/3)

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The movie is about young people from a small American town who have nightmares in which they are chased by a man with a glove with sharp blades. Some of them start to be killed in their sleep by that same man from their nightmares, Freddy Krueger. It is one of the first appearances of such an iconic psychopath in horror movies since the 80s.

Although Freddy is a fictional character, the director got the inspiration from reading a newspaper article about a group of refugees who survived the Killing Fields in Cambodia. These survivors reported that they had such intense nightmares that they did not want to sleep in order to not have them again.

One of the 21-year-olds stayed awake for a week because of his fear of nightmares and when he finally fell asleep, they found him dead.

2. The Exorcist (1973)

The movie, based on a novel, tells the story of the devilish possession of a twelve-year-old girl, and the exorcism to which she was later subjected. The author of the novel was inspired by an exorcism of a 14-year-old boy that occurred in 1949 that was reported by The Washington Post. The boy had sudden changes to his personality and several exorcisms were performed to "cure" him.

3. The Hills have Eyes (1977 and 2006)

In the movie, we see how a family is stranded in the Nevada Desert, USA. They then begin to be pursued and attacked by a group of deformed people, who became that way due to nuclear tests in the desert.

Although the misshapen clan never existed in the desert in real life, they were based on the mythical figure of "Alexander Sawney Bean". Many believe he lived with his family in a cave in the Scottish Highlands in the fifteenth or sixteenth century.

Supposedly, Bean and his wife lived for 25 years in a cave on the coast in Bennane Head with 8 children, 6 daughters, 18 grandchildren, and 14 grandchildren - many of whom were products of incest. The clan survived by abducting individuals or small groups during the night and taking the bodies to the cave to be eaten.

4. The Conjuring (2013)

Here is a story of a couple of demonologists hired to investigate the curse on a family in New England. The demonologists and Perron family, who claimed to be cursed by a witch from the 19th century, actually existed.

In 1971, the family moved to the colonial farm and the first phenomenon that occurred was the presence of a spirit that used to knock on the door of the house every night. From then on, the spirits began to manifest in different ways.

The most feared and violent spirit was one that was identified in a séance as Bathsheba, who wanted to take control over Carolyn, the mother of the Perron family. Bathsheba believed herself to be the owner of the house and that is why she was determined to chase them out of there.

The spirit approached her at night and they described her as a being that had a hideous and misshapen face, a broken neck, and head tilted to one side. According to local legends, Bathsheba was a woman suspected of being a witch and was accused of sacrificing a child as an offering to the devil.

More than two dozen mysterious deaths occurred on the property while she lived there. There have been two documented suicides (one of them a hanging in one of the barns), a poisoning, the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl, two drownings, and the death of four men by freezing.

5. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

Out of all horror movies that are based on a true story, this story itself is among the top. The movie is based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a German woman who endured a large number of exorcisms until she died a year later from malnutrition and dehydration. She lived a normal life until a German neurologist diagnosed her with epilepsy in 1968.

Due to severe epileptic seizures and depression, Anneliese was admitted to the hospital for treatment. Shortly after the epileptic attacks began, Anneliese began to see evil images during her daily prayers. She was obsessed with being possessed, and voices began to haunt her telling her that she was going to "burn in hell."

Three years later, her parents visited different pastors to request an exorcism but were rejected. The attacks did not abate and her demeanor became much more erratic. They finally took her home and she began to insult, attacked, and even bit her relatives. She refused to eat because she said that the demons forbade it.

She slept on the stone floor, ate spiders, flies, and coal, and drank her own urine. Finally, in 1975, the family got an exorcism done on her. They said that she had to be saved from various demons, including Lucifer, Judas Iscariot, Nero, Cain, Hitler (!?), and some other damned souls.

They spent a year practicing 1-2 exorcism sessions per week and more than 40 recordings were made during the process. But unfortunately, she did not survive the sessions. In the movie, the Catholic priest who performed the exorcisms is denounced for negligent homicide. The depiction of the exorcism in the movie leaves the viewer to make the decision as to whether it was all because of paranoia and religious extremism than because of real demons.
