Minecraft sticks mostly to survival sandbox gameplay, which doesn't leave much space for other stuff. Recent updates added structures like trail ruins and trial chambers to make exploration and combat more interesting, but plenty of players still think some parts need more meat.

The good news is Minecraft's modding community is one of the biggest and most lively around, with mods for nearly anything you can picture. Keep reading for five Minecraft mods if dungeon crawling is your thing.

1) Dungeon Now Loading

If you're after new challenges and can't get enough dungeon crawling, Dungeon Now Loading is one of the first mods you should check out. It packs in unique mechanics, a bunch of dungeon types, mobs made just for dungeons and labyrinths, and plenty more.

Dungeon Now Loading includes two key dungeon styles: Labyrinth and Temple of Duality. Like the name says, labyrinths throw mazes and puzzles at you to confuse you before you hit hard mobs known as spawner carriers. These beefy enemies lug around an active spawner that pops out hostile mobs every so often. Temple of Duality spans three layers, letting you tackle redstone puzzles or slug it out with tough foes. Each floor ups the ante with harder fights and sweeter rewards for players who are clever or tough enough to beat them. At the bottom, you face a new boss called the Ballista Golem.

2) Dungeon Difficulty

Dungeon Difficulty sticks to Minecraft's open-world sandbox roots but slips in dungeon crawling in a smart way. Rather than tossing in new dungeons, it turns the entire world into one by tying difficulty to your spot on the map.

Once you install Dungeon Difficulty, trouble scales with the structure and biome you're in. It has three core levels: Adventure, Dungeon, and Heroic. Adventure spots give mobs boosted stats. Dungeon mode does that plus upgrades loot quality there. Heroic matches Dungeon but slaps boss bars on the big threats, like the Warden in an ancient city.

Mod maker YUNGNICKYOUNG has a lineup of top-notch world generation mods that revamp popular structures, dungeons included. YUNG's Better Dungeons takes aim at the vanilla game's lame dungeons—just basic rooms with one mob spawner.

With this mod, you'll run into fresh dungeon varieties like spider nests, buried undead fortresses, catacombs packed with nasty mobs and winding passages, and others. It even overhauls those old spawner rooms with better layouts and extra details.

4) Roguelike Dungeons

Minecraft and procedural dungeons go hand in hand, so Roguelike Dungeons delivers big ones generated on the fly in the Overworld.

Install it, and look for a stone tower—often near villages—that's your way in. It kicks off with a safe rest zone before you drop into the depths. Down there, staircases lead to rooms swarming with monsters in special armor, kinda like the ones from ominous trials.

5) Stalwart Dungeons

Maxresdefault 3

A lot of dungeon mods focus on the Overworld and skip the Nether and End. Stalwart Dungeons fixes that with two new dungeons in the Nether and one in the End. You'll meet fresh hostile mobs inside, plus rare ores for crafting higher-tier armor and gear. Don't go in unless you're geared up—powerful bosses lurk within.
