Video games tend to have a shorter lifespan than movies as not many titles can retain its attraction after a certain amount of time. The reasons are many. It can be the fact that newer games have enhanced graphics or the controlling system can no longer keep up with the current trend.

The first solution that comes to people’s mind might be to remake all of them and fix/add features. However, due to the amount of work required, developers can only put an effort on reviving only shortlisted titles. When they do, though, there are actually games that outperform their original versions.

Before we dive in the list of those titles, let’s make it clear that there is a distinction between remaking and remastering.

When developers decide to make a somewhat brand new game, only keeping the essence of the original, that will be called a remake. However, when they remaster something, they only enhance the graphics and keep everything else intact.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

Still the marsupial we know and love

After the public no longer had any hope to see their beloved marsupial again, Shaun Layden announced at the 2016 E6 that a remastering plan was under way.

What they gave us is a title that excels in both the appearance and the sensation. Vicarious Visions also fixes lots of the original version’s problems regarding the controls. The remaster was a financial success. Its performance exceeds anyone’s expectation, leading to the remake of Crash Team Racing.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

its humor and gameplay remain

After 2 decades have passed and several other titles have been introduced, The Secret of Monkey Island’s charm remains. The excellent music, the plots, the way it is played, the daring adventures, and the humor prove that they can still pull in players.

The team behind this remake is the same people that made the original version, including Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, and Dave Grossman. What they make this time is an even better title than the classic we know. The improvement in audio is visible (pun intended) in every level and the smooth graphics highlight all the appealing details of this virtual world.

Another new feature, something fans have been longing for, is added, which is the voice acting.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D

Most of the problems with the original version are fixed

The 2015 remake of Majora’s Mask 3DS was more than welcome as it fixed all of the most pressing issues with the old version.

As for what irritated players in the original, some of the most reported issues were that the side-quests somewhat share the same structure, progress could not be saved, and the exhausting time mechanic. These are what the new version solves. There is a notebook for players’ side-quests and the Owl Statues, which spares you the inconvenience of going back to the first days for save spots. All of the upgrades are warmly welcomed by players.

Ratchet & Clank

The storyline remains the same

No list of excellent remakes can be complete without 2016 Ratchet & Clank. This title is more than a regular remake as the game has part of it reinterpreted. The developer has kept the basic storyline of the encounter of Lombax and the robot. They did not get along well at first but eventually became bosom buddies.

The graphics of this game may remind players of a Pixar’s product while the weapons and humor all play part in the pair’s accomplishments.

Metroid: Zero Mission

The game sports a colorful art style

When remaking was not a popular concept, Nintendo decided to add an art style that sports a kaleidoscopic range of colors to the classic voyage of Samus Aran to planet Zebes.

The game features new items and some more mini-bosses, which elaborates on the storyline. The history of Samus also gets clearer in this remake. On top of that, when players accomplish Zero Mission with hard mode on, the original outing will be unlocked.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Lara is on a quest for the Scion of Atlantis

Tomb Raider: Anniversary has breathed new life into Lara Croft’s very first adventure when she was still a newbie and had to go on a search for the Scion of Atlantis. Crystal Dynamics was entrusted with this remake project after proving its ability with 2006’s Legend.

What Crystal Dynamics did was to expand the locations, renovate the environment, and best of all, retain the kind of feeling that players had with the original version while doing so. This did not come as a surprise for players who have experienced the 2013 version of Tomb Raider. If it was not for the Wii version, everything would be perfect.

Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee

The graphics are enhanced

The application of Pokemon Go’s way of operation has put this game at the center of the debate. However, one would be hard pushed to deny that Pokémon Let's Go has been successful in bringing Kanto to life.

Let’s Go sports an improvement in graphics, Alolan Pokemon, and secret techniques. On top of that, this game features the idea of the pocket monsters in the overworld. This approach was so successful that fans are demanding the same thing to be used for Gen 8.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy

This game excels in both design and gameplay

With the look of something created by DreamWorks, this new version of Spyro boasts a kind of appearance that will surely attract players. In term of mechanics, this game is excellent too, with dragons flying and breathing fire.

This game shares that same nostalgia for a classic mascot with Crash and it has proven that after 2 decades, Spyro can still pull in players. Toys for Bob has made the same success out of this game as what Vicarious Visions did to Crash.

Shadow of the Colossus

Even the smallest detail appears vividly

Bluepoint Games has made a name for itself as an expert of remaking and what it did to Shadow of the Colossus plays as a reminder of that fact. The environments are created in a way that even the smallest detail appears vividly.

With the current technology, what Fumito Ueda envisioned for the game has finally been realized. The game now runs at 30 frames per second and a resolution of 1080p, for PS4 Pro, it boasts a speed of 60 frames per second. This is a prime example of how a remake should look like.
