Cupertino spent a decade treating foldable phones like a fad. Then, at Wednesday's "Surprise and Shine" event, new CEO John Ternus held up a passport-shaped slab and introduced the iPhone Duo. It starts at $1,999. The 2TB model is $3,199. That is not a phone. That is a down payment that texts.
The surprise was not the fold. Samsung and Google have sold folding phones for years. Apple arrived late, then charged more than both at comparable base storage.
A $2,000 Passport With Apps
Closed, the Duo is about the size of a passport. Open, it becomes a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch cover screen. Apple says it is the thinnest iPhone when unfolded. It did not say it is cheap.
You can run two apps at once and use Apple Pencil. You also pay nearly two thousand dollars before a case, AppleCare, or the storage bump Apple treats like a tip jar:
- 256GB: $1,999
- 512GB: $2,199
- 1TB: $2,599
- 2TB: $3,199
That last jump is $1,200 extra for flash memory. You can rent 2TB of iCloud for about $10 a month. Apple will sell you the same capacity inside the phone for a four-figure surcharge on day one. Pre-orders open October 16. It ships October 23 in Star White or Night Sky, which gives you a month to decide which color best matches financial regret.
The Regular Phones Cost More Too
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199. The Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both are $100 higher than last year, both start at 256GB, and both now go to 2TB. There is no standard iPhone 18 this fall. Last year's leftover models went up $100 as well. Apple blamed memory chip costs.
The Pro phones do get a 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip, a variable aperture camera, a smaller Dynamic Island, and a bigger battery. Those are real upgrades. They used to arrive without a ceremonial surcharge and a missing base model. Colors include black, silver, glacier, and burgundy. Burgundy pairs well with a credit card statement.
The Real Product Is the Price
The Duo has the A20 Pro chip, vapor-chamber cooling, Apple's C2 modem, and Touch ID in the side button. It is a serious machine. It is also about $100 more than rival foldables, financed at roughly $83 a month for 24 months on the base model.
Apple also announced the Watch Series 12 at $399, the Watch Ultra 4 at $799, and AirPods 5 from $129. Those prices look almost reasonable next to a phone that costs as much as all three stacked together.
Ternus called the Duo the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. The hinge is new for Apple. The price chart is not. If you want the new shape, you can have it October 23. If you want a phone that does not require a family meeting, last year's lineup is still there. It just costs $100 more than it did last week.
