In late August 2026, a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit, the default spec for a current gaming PC, costs about $400. A year ago that same capacity was $80 to $120. A 128GB DDR5-6400 kit that once bottomed out at $329 now lists at $3,399. This is not a holiday blip. It is the consumer side of an AI-driven memory squeeze, and Q3-Q4 2026 is still making it worse.

Why memory is still climbing

Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have steered wafer capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators. HBM pays more than a retail RAM kit and uses far more silicon. A gigabyte of HBM can take two and a half to three times the wafer area of ordinary DDR5. Consumer DRAM is what is left after data-center contracts are filled.

TrendForce recorded conventional DRAM contracts up about 93 to 98 percent in Q1 2026, then another 58 to 63 percent in Q2. Q3 forecasts are slower, around 13 to 18 percent, because buyers hit an affordability wall. That is a slower rise from an already high base, not cheaper RAM. Other analysts still expect steeper second-half gains, including another 40 to 50 percent in Q3 and 30 to 40 percent in Q4. Morgan Stanley has flagged DDR4 for a 50 percent Q3 jump as older nodes get starved to feed HBM.

New fabs will not add much volume until late 2027 or 2028. Samsung says the crunch lasts through 2028 and that 2027 may be tighter than 2026. SK Hynix has called 2027 the worst supply year in industry history.

What builders are paying

By August 2026, 32GB of DDR5-6000 was about $392 to $400. 64GB kits were around $849. 96GB kits hit about $1,799. Even 16GB of DDR5-6000 often costs more than $200. DDR4 did not stay cheap. Builders who fled to older platforms still found 32GB DDR4 kits in the $150 to $230 range.

Micron wound down its Crucial retail brand in February 2026 to focus on enterprise AI. OEMs have already raised memory upgrade prices and system SKUs.

GPUs and SSDs got hit too

Graphics memory is part of the same factory fight. GDDR spot prices have been cited near $2.50 per gigabyte in late 2025 and about $7.50 by mid-2026. On some high-VRAM cards, memory now dominates the bill of materials. The RTX 5090 launched at $1,999 and later appeared near $4,300, with premium boards over $5,000. Mid-range Nvidia cards jumped tens of percent between June and August. AMD raised Radeon plus GDDR6 kit prices by about 10 percent. A 1TB Gen4 SSD that was $70 to $80 now often sits closer to $130 to $185.

In a mid-range build, 32GB of RAM used to be 8 to 10 percent of the budget. Now it can be 25 percent or more. A 64GB kit can rival a mid-range GPU.

If you still need a gaming PC

Buy the capacity you will use this year. Extra sticks at 2026 prices are a weak hedge if you can wait. 16GB or 32GB is enough for most games. Used 2024-2025 systems and complete DDR5 kits can make more sense than a new build. Older DDR4 platforms are not free, but they can still beat a new AM5 or Intel setup if you already own the board.

Do not plan a holiday build around a price crash. Relief, if it comes, is a 2028 story. Until those fabs ship bits, gaming hardware will keep looking like a luxury product that happens to run games.
