Hideaki Itsuno, Game Director of Dragon’s Dogma 2 has recently revealed his new source of inspiration for the new action RPG’s elements. Itsuno mentioned that GTA 5 greatly inspired him because of its ability to blend different gameplay systems seamlessly, providing players with a satisfying and unrestricted experience in terms of what they can choose to do.
The experienced Capcom developer also highlighted GTA 5's ability to handle multiple simultaneous events seamlessly. According to Itsuno, you might find yourself in a situation that escalates unexpectedly and intersects with other activities in the game world. "The game handles this smoothly; it doesn't interrupt or separate different events but rather allows them to blend together naturally," Itsuno emphasized. He further noted that while this may result in occasional chaos, it always feels deliberate and adds to the overall experience.
Itsuno has touched upon something that the GTA series is widely known allowing players to go on chaotic rampages throughout its open worlds, often pursued by police and military forces. Personally, he's lost track of how many times he's found himself being hunted down in GTA 5 after a skirmish escalated quickly. As Itsuno mentioned, the game's world dynamically responds to the chaos unfolding, adding to the immersive experience.
"And that level of intentionality in emergent gameplay and open-world design is something that truly impressed me when GTA 5 was released. It's the kind of experience I've been aiming to offer in Dragon's Dogma 2," Itsuno concluded, referring to the matter.
Regarding the expansive open world, Dragon's Dogma 2's map is four times larger than that of the original RPG. Furthermore, it's confirmed that Dragon's Dogma 2 will not include fast travel within its open world, similar to the first game. Itsuno previously remarked that fast travel is only necessary in games with "boring" worlds.
