After five years of hard work, a group of modders has pulled off something awesome: they’ve recreated the gameplay of Portal inside Minecraft. This project, called Portal: Java Edition, lets players on Minecraft: Java Edition mess around with Portal’s puzzle mechanics or even build their own levels. The coolest part? It runs on vanilla Minecraft, so you don’t need any extra mods to jump in.
Portal and Minecraft hit the gaming world around the same time, with Portal dropping in 2007 and Minecraft in 2009. Both were huge hits back then. Minecraft keeps getting updates and stays super popular, while Portal got a sequel with co-op mode in Portal 2 but hasn’t seen much action since. If you’re itching for some Portal action, this Minecraft project might be just what you need.
Modders Make Portal Inside Vanilla Minecraft
The modding team behind Portal: Java Edition has brought the full Portal 2 experience into Minecraft. Amazingly, it works without any extra mods, using just Minecraft’s built-in data packs and resource packs. A demo video shows off all the classic Portal stuff fans love, like portals, light bridges, excursion funnels, lasers, emancipation grills, mobility gels, and aerial faith plates. The visuals are so spot-on that some folks watching the video thought it was actual Portal gameplay.
Portal: Java Edition comes with 50 levels and eight map packs, giving players tons of puzzles to tackle. Plus, for those who want to get creative, there’s a map editor that lets you design your own Portal-style levels, which should keep things fresh for a long time.
Minecraft is all about building whatever you can dream up, and that includes recreating other games. Fans have already remade classics like Tetris, Super Mario Bros., and Pac-Man in Minecraft. Some, like a Legend of Zelda recreation, didn’t even need mods, just like this Portal project.
