An open-source project called bbport is running the PlayStation 4 version of Bloodborne directly on Linux. It is not a full console emulator. The game's own x86-64 code executes on the PC, while a custom runtime stands in for the PS4 system libraries.

Developer deadinside28 published the work on GitHub. The target build is the retail executable CUSA03173, game version 1.09. Game files are not included. Players must supply their own copy. The project is not affiliated with Sony, FromSoftware, or AMD.

How the port works

Graphics go through a Vulkan renderer derived from the shadPS4 emulator and heavily extended for this one game. The author compares the setup to Wine plus DXVK, but built only for Bloodborne. Multithreaded GPU command handling is meant to smooth the frame pacing that hurt the original 30 frames-per-second console release.

Community patches in the repository can unlock the frame rate so the simulation uses real frame time. The project lists 30, 60, and 90 FPS modes, plus an unlocked option. On the only machine tested in depth, an AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT with Mesa 26 and the RADV driver, the author reports about 90 FPS at 4K with FSR 4 Balanced, and about 150 FPS at 1440p with FSR 4 Quality.

Upscaling and features

Bloodborne has no velocity buffer, so bbport builds motion vectors itself. Camera motion comes from depth and scene matrices. Object motion, including characters, cloth, and weapons, comes from the previous frame's vertex positions. The scene is jittered and rendered at a lower internal resolution, then upscaled. The interface is drawn at the output resolution.

Supported upscalers are FSR 3.1, FSR 4, and FSR 4.1.1. FSR 4.1.1 is captured from AMD's DLL under vkd3d-proton and replayed on Vulkan. Output resolutions include 720p for Steam Deck, plus 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p. Unsupported GPUs fall back to FSR 3.1.

Sound, gamepad input, and save loading are reported working. An in-game menu exposes settings. Steam Deck support is part of the pitch, and early handheld tests have already appeared online. Requirements are Linux x86-64 and a Vulkan 1.3 GPU. FSR 4 and 4.1.1 need specific shader features. RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 cards are listed as capable where those features are present.

Still experimental

Status on the repository is experimental but playable. The Hunter's Dream and several areas of Yharnam have been played with audio and saves. A full playthrough has not been verified, and thorough testing is limited to one AMD Linux machine. This is a compatibility layer for one executable, not a source-code rewrite. FromSoftware has not shipped an official PC version.

For players who have waited since the 2015 launch, bbport is the closest thing yet to Bloodborne on a PC. It is also unfinished, unofficial, and dependent on hardware and a legitimate game dump. Frame-rate claims should be read as the author's results, not a guarantee.
