Sony ended its partnership with Kojima Productions on Physint, the next-gen action-espionage game first shown in 2024. Xbox has taken over publishing. The move adds to a string of PlayStation setbacks.
How the Deal Fell Apart
Physint was announced at a PlayStation State of Play as a collaboration between Sony and Hideo Kojima's studio. It was presented as his return to stealth action after leaving Konami, with ties to Columbia Pictures for a game-and-movie approach. In mid-June 2026 Sony sent Kojima Productions unexpected notice that it was canceling the project. Kojima spent three months looking for a new partner and chose Xbox, which already works with him on the horror title OD. The new deal also includes film and television plans.
Sony said it made a difficult decision after careful consideration, still admires Kojima's vision, and calls the long relationship strong. Kojima said Sony canceled the project and that Physint was too important to let die.
Sony's Recent Track Record
The cancellation fits a pattern. Concord, a costly hero shooter, launched to almost no players and was pulled after two weeks. Its studio Firewalk closed. Other live-service projects and studios, including Bluepoint Games, were canceled or shut down after Sony's plan for a dozen live-service titles collapsed. First-party output this generation has been thin. PlayStation Network has suffered repeated outages with no compensation. Sony will stop making physical game discs after January 2028. A recent State of Play was widely called disappointing.
Xbox Takes the Opening
Xbox already had a working relationship with Kojima through OD. When Sony stepped away it stepped in. Kojima's two current original projects now sit with Microsoft. Sony still has Death Stranding 2 and claims future talks remain open, but it announced Physint on its own stage and then walked away. Xbox simply accepted the project Sony no longer wanted.
