In Minecraft, rerolling enchantments means refreshing the random options shown in the enchanting table when the current selections do not meet your needs. This technique helps players hunt for strong combinations such as Fortune III, Silk Touch, Mending, or Unbreaking III without wasting precious resources on poor rolls.
The enchanting table generates three randomized enchantment offers based on your current experience level, the amount of lapis lazuli inserted, and the number of nearby bookshelves. These offers are tied to a hidden enchantment seed that only updates after you complete an actual enchantment.
Why Reroll Enchantments?
Good enchantments can dramatically improve your tools, weapons, and armor. Rerolling lets you cycle through options efficiently until you find the perfect set, saving both experience points and rare materials in the long run.
Prerequisites
- A fully set up enchanting table with 15 bookshelves for level 30 enchantments.
- Plenty of experience levels and lapis lazuli.
- Cheap dummy items such as wooden shovels, sticks, or books for testing.
- Optional: A grindstone for later cleanup.
How to Reroll Enchantment Options at the Table
- Place your target item (for example, a diamond pickaxe or netherite sword) into the enchanting table slot and check the three offered enchantments.
- If none of the options suit you, remove the item without enchanting.
- Grab a cheap dummy item like a wooden shovel or book.
- Place the dummy item into the table and enchant it at the lowest available level (usually level 1, costing 1 experience level and 1 lapis lazuli). This action resets the enchantment seed.
- Remove the newly enchanted dummy item.
- Put your original target item back into the table. Three fresh enchantment options will now appear.
- Repeat steps 3 through 6 as many times as needed until you see the enchantments you want.
Using the Grindstone to Remove Unwanted Enchantments
If you have already enchanted an item but regret the result:
- Craft or locate a grindstone.
- Place the enchanted item in the grindstone along with any other item (or leave the second slot empty).
- Activate the grindstone to strip all enchantments and recover a portion of the experience spent.
- Repair the item if necessary, then head back to the enchanting table for a clean reroll.
Extra Tips for Faster Results
- Enchanting books instead of tools lets you build a library of useful enchantments that you can later combine on an anvil.
- Temporarily block some bookshelves with torches to lower the enchantment level and change the offered options without a full reset.
- Keep a stack of wooden tools handy so you never run out of dummy items.
- This method works the same in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
- Patience pays off. Strong rolls may require several dummy enchantments, but the process costs very little compared to settling for weak gear.
