Lunge is a fresh enchantment arriving in Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem. It works only on spears, a new close-combat weapon included in the update. Lunge sets itself apart by letting players dash ahead while using the weapon.
That said, there's a solid case that lunge won't gain much traction after launch in Minecraft. Here's the reasoning. Note: This piece is subjective and just the author's personal view.
Lunge enchantment costs hunger points
Lunge debuted in the snapshot stage of Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem and was a blast to play with. A quick jab attack (left-click) plus a jump sent players dashing. Community chatter focused on its potential to shake up exploration and travel entirely.
Snapshot 25w43a saw Mojang nerf it though. Now each dash drains hunger points. Chain dashes with an enchanted spear and hunger drops fast. Snapshot 25w44a cut the hunger cost, but it remained a nerf overall. Here are the costs for all lunge levels:
- Lunge enchantment level 1: 1 hunger point (half a hunger bar point)
- Lunge enchantment level 2: 2 hunger points (one hunger bar point)
- Lunge enchantment level 3: 3 hunger points (one and a half hunger bar points)
Jab attack damage does not increase with speed
Jab attacks also fail to scale with speed, which hurts lunge's appeal. Spears include a charge attack mode where higher speed means more damage.
Jab attacks get no such benefit. Players can dash at enemies with a lunge-enchanted spear, but the jab still deals only base damage. This renders lunge pointless in fights.
Tips and tricks for using Lunge
Even with its limits, lunge has some solid uses if you play smart. Here are a few ways to get the most out of it:
- Stock up on high-saturation foods like steak, golden carrots, or suspicious stews to keep your hunger topped off and chain more dashes without starving.
- Lunge midair for the longest distance. Jump first, then jab to propel way farther than on the ground.
- Look dead horizontal ahead of you. Any up or down angle wastes momentum.
- Lunge into a charge attack. The speed from the dash boosts your charge damage big time, turning it into a combo for serious hits.
- Pair with elytra for cheap flight boosts. Lunge in the air to rack up speed, then glide. Saves fireworks and feels smooth.
- Use it for quick exploration, shoving mobs around, or parkour courses where durability does not matter.
Why Mojang should buff Lunge to make the game more fun
Lunge started out as this cool mobility tool that could flip exploration on its head, but the nerfs turned it niche at best. Mojang should dial it back up to recapture that spark and make spears a real game-changer.
- First, make jab attacks scale with speed just like charge. Right now, lunging into a mob leaves you hitting for peanuts. Let the dash momentum amp jab damage too, and suddenly it's a killer close-range combo.
- Second, swap the hunger drain for a quick cooldown. No more munching mid-fight or cutting chains short. Levels could tweak the cooldown length: shorter for low levels, longer for max power. Keeps balance without punishing food management.
- Third, let it work on mounts for epic jousting. Spears shine in mounted combat already; lunge would make horse charges insane.
These tweaks would pump up spears without breaking anything. More fun movement, better PvP, fresh combat flow. Mojang, bring back the hype!
