If you have been active on social networks recently, you might see the phrase ‘simps’ everywhere. First started on TikTok, the phrase is now spread into Twitter. But what does ‘simp’ mean?

What Does Simp Mean
The phrase 'simp' has been widely used on TikTok since late last year.

In the past, it is a shorted form of the word 'simpleton', meaning a silly or foolish person. At the moment, ‘simp’ has two meanings, one of which is the original slang meaning while the other one is a bit less offensive meaning. So what are the two definitions? Let’s start with the first one.

According to Urban Dictionary, simp is short for ‘Somebody/Sucka Who Idolizes Mediocre Pussy’. The top-rated definitions on the platform are "someone who will say anything to please someone, particularly a girl, in the hopes that they will be in good favor with that person" or "a man who puts the hoes before the bros".

You can also find the definition for the phrase on Dictionary.com, which explains that the word is used “for men who are seen as too attentive and submissive to women, especially out of a failed hope of winning some entitled sexual attention or activity from them.” Well, you can also call these people ‘white knight’ as well.

At the end of last year, a trend called “Simp Nation” popped up on the popular short-video platform TikTok. The trend sees teens (mostly men) explain a case where they tried to do nice things for someone they like (mostly girls). When that doesn’t work, they are welcomed to the “Simp Nation”, which is a place where guys failed to win women’s love.

The trend doesn’t just stop there. The #Simp hashtag on TikTok has got around 900 million views with videos of men jokingly exposing their friends or even themselves for simping after women. You can also see that the phrase ‘simp’ is used in a slightly different way on TikTok or other social networks.

You can see the phrases like “I might have to simp” or “CEO of simping” surfacing on social networks and teens who call themselves simps for many reasons. Fandoms, stan communities, and more have adopted the ‘simp’ phrase. If they say that they are simps for a cute guy / girl, celebrity, or a TV character, it means they are willing to do anything for them.

You can watch the TikTok video below, in which the girls share the TV / movie characters they would simp for.
