Bhoot Part 1: The Haunted Ship is the most promising Bollywood horror movie recently

Casts: Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea,...

Revenue: Rs. 21.46 Crore

Speaking about a horror movie idol in the early 21st century, there was no one more worthy than Raaz. Not only it is the second highest-grossing movie of 2002, but also it also set a solid base for the later successful career of the actress Bipasha Basu by winning her a Filmfare Best Actress Award. It's also the first installment of the Raaz series, and was still mentioned again and again even now.

Raaz tells the story of a married couple Aditya Dhanraj and Sanjana Dhanraj (starring Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu) moving to a new place to find a way to fix their deteriorating relationship. However, it seems that their new house was haunted by a wicked ghost, and the husband is also a part of the plot that the ghost is carrying on, and Sanjana has to find a way to solve it.

The movie stood out at that time not only for the horror elements including spirit-summoning, killing and jump scares but also for the reasonable romantic elements. The story rotates around fixing a relationship of a married couple, forgiving for one's pasts and hold hands till the very end. The ending of Raaz also made viewers' hearts skip some beats with some unexpected events as well.

Can Sanjana pull her husband back from the hands of the evil spirit?

Overall, its stories, events and the actings of the leading characters are the reason why Raaz (2002) is the biggest horror hit of 2002, and inspired the two following stories in the future.

2. Haunted (2011):

Director: Vikram Bhatt

Casts: Mahaakshay Chakraborty, Tia Bajpai,...

Revenue: Rs. 26.39 Crore

The master of horror - Vikram Bhatt came back with Haunted after a not-so-successful second installment of the Raaz series - Raaz - The Mystery Continues. However, without the reputation of the franchise, Haunted could only be a box office hit at its time and could get to the level of a blockbuster. However, the movie still provide a very strong plot with time-traveling, and still worth a visit if you're running out of good horror movie.

To be more specific, Haunted tells the story of a real-estate agent - Rehan (Mahaakshay Chakraborty) - trying to sell a haunted manor. Rehan didn't believe that there's an evil spirit in the house at first, but after suffering from a fatal attack at night, he has to find out the real story. He gradually finds out the saddening story of Meera Sabharwal (Tia Bajpai) - the daughter of the former owner of the mansion.

In short, she escaped a rape case by her piano teacher by killing him, but the guy turned into a spirit and raped her again and again, which resulted in her suicide. Haunted (2011) is the first Indian stereoscopic 3D movie

In the end, Haunted doesn't have a ridiculous love story that brought powers to the leading characters, or some boring loving scenes. However, it still gives viewers a lot of chills with the engrossing rape cases, and transfer the message of sacrifice oneself to save the one the belove.

3. Raaz 3D (2012):

Director: Vikram Bhatt

Casts: Bipasha Basu, Emraan Hashmi,...

Revenue: Rs. 70.07 Crore

Even though the second installment in the series - Raaz: The Mystery Continues in 2009 performed decently at the box office, it's actually quite poor when compared with the third installment - Raaz 3D. In detail, Raaz 3D is actually the highest-grossing movie of the entire Raaz series and is still one of the most successful Bollywood horror movies so far.

Maybe one reason behind this is that Bipasha Basu didn't take part in the 2009 movies, and only came back with the third installment. We'll meet our familiar name Aditya, Sanjana and Shanaya again, but in a completely different concept. Specifically, Shananya (starred by Bipasha Basu) is an actress sitting on the peak of her career, who is also in love with Aditya (Emraan Hashmi).

However, her career then suddenly collapsed due to the ascending of a new face - Sanjana (Esha Gupta). Filled with desperation and anger, Shanaya has come to black magic to destroy the career of Sanjana. In order to deliver the black poison to Sanjana, Shanaya had sex with Aditya and convinced him to give it to Sanjana. Aditya accepted it at the start, but then realizing that it's immoral, and has turned to love Sanjana in the progress. Shanaya decided to take her revenge by her own hands, pulling Aditya and Shanaya to the soul world.

"When desires turn evil" - the tagline for Bollywood commercial success Raaz 3 (2012)

The great thing about Raaz 3D is the relentless flow of the love story between the duo, especially Aditya, who eventually saves his lover - Shanaya from the soul world. Apart from that, the sex scenes and engrossing scenes are utilized very well so that they didn't influence the thrilling atmosphere of the movie.

4. Golmaal Again (2017)

Director: Rohit Shetty

Casts: Ajay Devgn, Parineeti Chopra,...

Revenue: Rs. 205.51 Crore

Golmaal Again is actually the highest-grossing movie on our today's list, and there's a reason for it. The director Rohit Shetty didn't take the normal approach of romantic-horror with this movie, but the comedic approach instead. Comedy and horror should suit each other at all, but the director and the casts have somehow successfully transferred the horror story of the orphans.

The fourth installment of the Golmaal franchise tells the story of Gopal, Madhav, Lucky, Laxman 1 and Laxman 2 back to the orphanage that they used to live in, just to find that the orphanage is haunted by the one that no one expected - Khushi, the young baby girl that the gang has found and brought her to the house. Instead of a dark and haunting atmosphere, the story was told in a vivid background of the orphanage. However, you'll be shocked once the killing story starts to unveil, and will end up relieving with Khushi's departure to heaven.

The rapid shifts from comedy to horror is the most unique element of Golmaal Again (2017)

The rapid changes in pace, an intriguing and entertaining story as well as the splendid acting from the cast - that's more than enough to make Golmaal incredibly successful despite mixed reviews on its exotic concept.
