Garena Free Fire has rolled out the OB54 patch as part of its 9th Anniversary celebrations. The update focuses on refining gameplay balance through targeted tweaks to several characters and weapons. These changes aim to reduce overpowered options while boosting underused ones, creating a more diverse and strategic experience in Battle Royale and Clash Squad modes.
The patch went live around June 23, 2026. It includes adjustments to character skills, a new Weapon Awakening system, and updates to how players acquire certain guns. Overall, the meta is shifting toward better counterplay and fresh loadout possibilities.

Character Balance Adjustments
Several heroes received direct skill modifications to better define their roles and prevent dominance in matches.
Nero
Nero faced a notable nerf after strong performance in prior patches. His Cryo Mind skill now deploys a much weaker plushie with only 1 HP instead of 150. The dreamy space it creates deals less damage over time, dropping from 10 HP per second to 6. The plushie is far easier to destroy, giving opponents more time to react. These changes shift Nero's power toward area control and anti-Gloo Wall utility rather than raw damage output.
Chrono
Chrono received a buff to his Time Turner skill. The cooldown dropped from 60 seconds to 45 seconds, allowing more frequent use of the impenetrable force field that blocks 1000 damage.
Maro
Maro saw a reduction in his Falcon Fervor skill. The maximum damage increase with distance fell from 25% to 20%, slightly toning down his long-range potential.
Oscar
Oscar experienced a cooldown increase on Valiant Dash from 45 seconds to 60 seconds. This adjustment makes his dash and Gloo Wall detonation less spammable.
Nikita
Nikita got a nerf to Firearms Expert. The reload speed boost decreased from 30% to 20%. Her skill still applies a healing deduction to hit targets, but the overall pace of her reload advantage is reduced.
Olivia
Olivia benefited from a buff to Healing Touch. The spread of her single-target healing to nearby teammates increased from 80% to 90%, and the effective range grew from 15 meters to 20 meters. This makes her a stronger team support option.
In addition to these direct changes, the patch introduces Skill Boosts for several characters. Players can earn enhancements through in-match progress, such as improved versions of Chrono’s force field, Oscar’s dash, Wukong’s camouflage, Skyler’s sonic waves, and others. Characters without specific boosts gain a 15% skill cooldown reduction instead. This system adds depth and rewards skillful play throughout matches.
Weapon Balance Adjustments
The update brings buffs to several weapons and expands their availability. Garena also introduced Weapon Awakening, a new feature that lets players upgrade most weapons (excluding melee and secondaries) using Weapon Awakeners obtained from upgraded Arsenals or automatically when only 10 players remain.
Here are the key weapon tweaks:
- PARAFAL: Armor penetration increased by 5%. Rarity changed to Gold.
- MP40: Armor penetration boosted by 10%, accuracy improved by 5%, and weapon switch speed increased by 25%. Rarity changed to Gold.
- M590: Headshot falloff range extended by 15% and weapon switch speed increased by 20%. Rarity changed to Gold.
- M82B: Damage raised by 6%, armor penetration increased by 10%, and range extended by 20%. Rarity changed to Gold.
The Shield Gun now reduces incoming damage by 5% with unlimited shield points instead of fully blocking damage with limited points. The Parang can now be used to attack while running.
Loot distribution changes make the buffed weapons more common. Basic and upgraded Arsenals now include PARAFAL, MP40, M590, and M82B. High-tier loot zones have higher drop rates for these guns. Vending machine options and other sources were also adjusted for better access in Battle Royale and Clash Squad.
These weapon updates aim to close the gap between strong and weak options, encouraging more varied loadouts and dynamic fights.
Impact on the Meta and What to Expect
The OB54 balance changes promote counterplay and reward adaptation. Nero’s nerf opens opportunities for other area-denial or support characters. Buffed weapons like the MP40 and M82B could see increased use in mid to late game, especially with the new awakening option that provides unlimited ammo and stat bonuses.
Skill Boosts add another layer of progression and customization during matches. Combined with quality-of-life improvements like better teammate weapon visibility and on-the-spot revival mechanics, the update feels fresh while staying true to Free Fire’s fast-paced style.
Players should experiment with the adjusted characters and newly accessible weapons to find what works best in the current meta. The 9th Anniversary events running alongside the patch offer additional rewards and themed content to enjoy while testing these changes.
Garena continues to monitor community feedback and performance data. Future patches may build on these foundations to keep the game balanced and exciting. Jump into OB54 and see how the updated roster and arsenal reshape your next victory!
