Leaks about a new kind of character equipment in Honkai: Star Rail have split the community. The rumored items are not framed as simple costumes. Leak accounts say they would change combat animations and skill behavior, and that they may not be fully free. That mix of power and price is what turned a routine leak cycle into a pay-to-win argument.

What the leaks claim
In May 2026, aggregator Star Rail Universe posted a report credited to Mortis and Ubatcha. It said Acheron, Jing Yuan, and Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae would receive "DLC weapons" that affect kits and animations. The currency was unknown. Possibilities included Stellar Jades, Oneiric Shards, or direct paid currency. The same report said one copy might be obtainable without a full cash purchase, but likely not entirely free.
A related leak quoted Mortis saying the first Acheron item was not a new skin, would affect skills, would not be free, and would arrive on Acheron first. Sparkle was also named in the same rumor wave.
That is the flashpoint. Star Rail already sells Light Cones and lets players farm Relics. A new item that changes how an owned character fights sounds closer to a paid kit upgrade than a hat or outfit.
Why players are split
Light Cones already act as weapons. Signature 5-star Cones sit on limited banners. Relics are grindable. Novaflare later arrived as a free kit refresh that owners can toggle on. The leaked DLC weapons cut across those systems. They sound visual, like a new look for Acheron's blade, and mechanical, like a second Light Cone or a paid Novaflare.
Critics call that pay-to-win. If older units need a paid item to stay relevant, players who already spent on Eidolons and signature Light Cones would be billed again. Supporters say extra animations are fine if the base kit still clears endgame content and if at least one copy can be earned in-game. The leak supports both readings because it never names a price.
Novaflare makes the fight sharper. That system was sold as a way to buff old characters without a second checkout. The fear is that free updates could shrink if HoYoverse can sell a power-affecting item instead.
