Persona 5: The Phantom X was a big hit when it launched globally last month, giving fans a fresh Persona game to sink their teeth into and sparking some awesome new memes thanks to the Subway Slammer. Things were going pretty smoothly until the latest update ticked off players outside of China.

Persona 5: The Phantom X Update Angers Fans Over "Favoritism" Towards CN Servers

The main issue is the new release schedule. The devs announced that global updates would speed up to match the Chinese version’s pace. Sounds good, right? Not really. They’re not giving players enough resources to keep up with the faster updates. Worse, Sega’s being way less generous with rewards for global players. For example, after a recent maintenance, global players got just 100 Meta-Gems, while Chinese server players scored 300. On top of that, players in some Asian countries got codes for an extra 300 Meta-Gems, bringing their total to 600—six times what global players received.

This, plus the lack of guaranteed banners and new characters getting dumped into the regular banner, has players calling out “favoritism” toward Asian servers. It’s got people pretty upset, and you can see it in the game’s Steam reviews, which dropped from Mostly Positive to Mixed today. Check the recent negative reviews, and most of them complain about the stingy rewards compared to China’s servers, with some saying global players are being “treated like trash.”

Some fans are even worried Sega’s rushing the game toward EOS (end of service), comparing it to Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, where global servers shut down last October, but Japanese servers kept running. Hopefully, Sega steps up and fixes these issues before Persona 5: The Phantom X faces the same fate.
