As a new trainer at Tracen Academy in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, your job is to get those horsegirls ready to crush it at the URA Finale, a big new race program set up by the academy’s director.
Training solid Umamusume isn’t just about winning the URA Finale. It’s also about putting together a killer team of experienced racers. These champs can compete in Team Trials and other races, pass down their know-how, and motivate the next batch of horsegirls.
How to Train Any Character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby
To get a character ready in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, jump into Career mode. Pick your favorite Umamusume, choose her Legacy Team and Support cards, and work on boosting her stats while hitting her career goals. If you’re new, here’s a straightforward breakdown of the steps, plus some tips to help you train top-notch Umamusume.
Choose a Horsegirl
First up, in Career mode, you pick the horsegirl you want to train. There are 26 characters total, but you’ll only see the ones you’ve unlocked. Each one has her own skills, stats, and strengths, so some are better suited for certain races than others.
If you’re new and not sure who to go with, Sakura Bakushin is a solid pick. She’s a front-runner who breezes through races and is one of the five characters you get from the start.
Pick the Right Legacy
After picking your horsegirl, you need to pair her with two Legacy Umamusume. These are retired racers who give stat boosts (like Speed, Stamina, or Guts) and skill hints at the start and during your character’s career, so choosing wisely is key. Since Legacy Umamusume pass on their stats, pick ones that match what you want your trainee to excel at.
For example, if you’re training a Sprint racer, go for a legacy horsegirl with an A rating in Sprint on her aptitude chart. If you’re unsure, stick with veterans who have strong Speed, Power, and Stamina, plus an A rank in Mile and Front style.
Heads up: the Legacy list only includes horsegirls you’ve already trained and finished careers with. To get better options, you’ll need to train more characters. You can also borrow guest Legacy Umamusume from trainers you follow, but it’ll cost you some in-game cash (Monies).
Lock in Relevant Support Cards
Next, build a deck of six Support Cards—five from your Gacha pulls and one borrowed. These are the horsegirls who train alongside your main character, helping with stuff like better starting stats (like Wit or Stamina), more fans, better mood, and extra race boosts.
Support cards also guide which skills your Umamusume focuses on, since she gets skill hints based on your deck. This helps her spot her weak areas and improve. Before starting, check the Perks button to make sure your deck is boosting the right stats. Aim for SSR or SR cards with relevant stats if you’ve got them, and level up your support cards—it makes a big difference.
Keep Training and Finishing Career Goals
Once your trainee is set up at the academy in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, you’ll start training her to hit her career goals. These show up at the top of the screen and usually involve winning big races to qualify for the URA Finale. You’ll also see a fan count requirement for each goal.
Your job as the trainer is to get her ready for the races listed in the goals bar, one at a time. You’ve got a limited number of days to train before each race. Here’s a quick rundown of the key stats to work on and what they do:
All Attributes | Description | Ideal Points |
---|---|---|
Speed | How fast your horsegirl runs. | About 900 before the URA Finale. |
Stamina | How long she can keep running without getting tired. | 300 to 800, depending on race length. |
Power | Helps her speed up during the race. | 460 to 600 |
Guts | Gives her the grit to push through, especially at the end. | 200 to 350 |
Wit | Helps her stay sharp and make smart moves mid-race, even if she’s behind. | 320 to 400 |
The Hints icon is a lifesaver during training. It’ll point you to the right stats to focus on, when to rest, or if it’s time for the Infirmary. Keep an eye on it.
Early on, focus on Speed, Stamina, and Wit, and join training sessions with the most Support card friends for extra stat boosts (check the top right corner). Each session uses one day and drains your horsegirl’s energy. If her energy gets too low, hit the Rest option to recharge. Don’t overdo it, or she might get hurt.
Mood matters a lot for training and racing. If your horsegirl’s in a bad mood, her performance and stat gains will suffer. You can lift her spirits with fun outings, but these take a full in-game day, so try to keep her mood up through smart conversation choices to avoid wasting time.
If your Umamusume gets injured, her mood will tank even more, so hit the Infirmary before planning any outings.
To meet race requirements, boost her fan count by entering extra races through the Races menu. Over the three-year journey to the URA Finale, keep working on her skills to make training races easier. Use Skill Points to unlock abilities, focusing on ones that boost Speed and Stamina or have a Hint discount, as those are super helpful.
Join The URA Finale and Complete Career in Umamusume: Pretty Derby
In Umamusume: Pretty Derby, most horsegirls have about 11 career goals, with the final ones usually involving winning races like the G2 Centaur Stakes, G1 Sprinters Stakes, and G1 Mile Championship. If your character wins all her training races and hits the right fan count, she qualifies for the URA Finale. Winning this race makes her a powerhouse and adds her to the Legacy Umamusume list as a legendary veteran, ready to inspire future trainees.
If your horsegirl doesn’t meet any of her career goals during training, her career ends early with weaker stats and a lower rank, and your contract with Tracen Academy gets cut. Still, you can use her as a Legacy horsegirl for another trainee’s run.
