Players accustomed to Minecraft's survival mode are likely acquainted with the plethora of aggressive creatures that emerge to pursue them once night descends. Over the years, Mojang has consistently expanded this roster of hostile mobs, introducing new adversaries such as Illagers, Piglin Brutes, and others to maintain a sense of novelty and excitement.
Nevertheless, certain older mobs in the game are overdue for a refresh. Some enhancements could render them more menacing, potent, or simply more significant within the Minecraft universe. Conversely, newer mobs possess untapped potential but currently lack engagement. Here's a rundown of the hostile mobs in Minecraft that would benefit from an upgrade.
1. Ender Dragon
Mojang understandably avoids altering the Ender Dragon, considering its significant role in Minecraft's lore. While preserving its essence is crucial, long-term players might concur that the battle against the Ender Dragon lacks excitement.
It might be time for Mojang to contemplate a significant overhaul. Could the fight's mechanics use a revamp? Might the boss arena benefit from a makeover? Perhaps the Ender Dragon requires a refreshed appearance featuring more intricate textures, new attacks, and animations? Just as block textures underwent recent changes, even a visual update could rejuvenate the timeless Ender Dragon, making it feel more pertinent once again.
2. Zombie
Including zombies on this roster might spark controversy due to their iconic status, yet their lack of evolution over the years makes them the most overdue for a refresh.
Fortunately, there are two variants—Drowned and Husks—alongside Zombie Villagers and rapid-moving Baby Zombies. Despite these variations, zombies still retain a certain blandness, rendering them the least appealing when it comes to farming for loot drops.
3. Magma Cube
Previously, this list covered slimes, and similarly, it's fitting to address the Nether's most uneventful hostile mob: the Magma Cube. These creatures hardly pose a threat to players, aside from their distinct appearance, lava traversing ability, and the Magma Cream they drop, lacking intrigue or menace.
Surprisingly, an entire biome is dedicated to Magma Cubes. Introducing a more formidable variant or granting the Magma Cube an additional ability—such as expelling fire or lava akin to the Blaze but within a shorter range—could inject some much-needed excitement into their gameplay.
4. Ravager
Encountering the Ravager is typically tied to stumbling into a village with the Bad Omen status, triggering a multi-wave raid where this formidable foe emerges as one of the adversaries.
On the positive side, the Ravager yields 20 XP orbs and boasts a commendable appearance. However, its loot drop is limited to a saddle, which seems underwhelming considering its status as one of the most resilient raid mobs.
Among the mobs in raids, the Ravager stands out for its robustness. Hence, it stands as a prime candidate for an improved loot drop, given its formidable role in these encounters.
5. Slimes
The inclusion of slimes in this lineup might stir some debate. Undoubtedly, this mob's iconic appearance and animations require no alterations. However, what necessitates a change is the "lore" surrounding slimes and their accessibility beyond the swamp biome, their commonly perceived habitat.
Most players are acquainted with slime chunks, an aspect of the game not integrated into its lore. Wouldn't it be intriguing if slimes had their subterranean mini-biome, specifically designated for slime chunks? Admittedly, this idea might have its drawbacks due to the potential surplus of slime chunks, but it's an idea worth exploring.
Expanding the variety of slimes across different biomes, like introducing blue and red variations, could be another modification. Additionally, granting them the ability to be bred, paying homage to Slime Rancher, might add an interesting dimension to their mechanics.
6. Phantom
One of the less favored mobs is the Phantom, a manta-ray-like creature that takes flight in the skies after three consecutive nights without the player sleeping. Many question why Mojang introduced this mob, as it tends to be more of an inconvenience than an engaging, frightening, or enjoyable aspect of gameplay.
Admittedly, Phantoms serve a purpose by dropping a crucial resource: Phantom Membrane. This item is essential for Elytra repairs, potentially suggesting Mojang's attempt to balance gameplay mechanics. However, despite this functionality, the Phantoms' unpopularity among players indicates they disrupt immersion rather than enhancing it within the game.
7. Snow Golem
The Snow Golem is the frozen equivalent of the Iron Golem. They can be manually created by players to defend themselves and their polar bases. While this sounds like a great idea, these mobs are really underwhelming in practice.
Similar to the Iron Golem, the Snow Golem's main purpose is defense. However, unlike the Iron Golem, their attack is really weak. Snow Golems' snowballs are harmless against most mobs - they only knock the mobs back. It would be interesting to see Snow Golems getting buffed in future Minecraft updates.
8. Wolf
The wolves are one of the most popular mobs in Minecraft, as a tamed wolf is the closest players can get to a pet dog in the game. Because of their popularity, a dynamic update to the whole wolf mob should be a good addition.
Firstly, they should focus on their variants, as wolves only come in white color. There are a lot of wolf colors in real life, which should translate into more color in Minecraft. An upgrade that lets players actually play with their tamed pets would be nice as well. Many players wish to be able to play catch with tamed wolves.
9. Iron Golems
In Java Edition, a villager can attempt to spawn an iron golem while not having a golem alive within the box of radius 16 blocks around the villager and more than 30 seconds have passed. Players can use this mechanic to create an iron golem farm. Zombies nearby increase the spawn rate of iron golems. If a zombie is seen by villagers, they panic and increase the rate of spawn attempts.
Iron Golems are powerful creatures but has nothing special outside of its stats. Mojang should definitely give them some extra abilities.
10. Blazes
Blazes are floating hostile mobs found in nether fortresses, and are the only source of blaze rods. These rods are essential in brewing and can serve as fuel for both brewing and smelting. Furthermore, blaze powder (from rods) is the other ingredient to create the eye of ender that leads the player to the End.
The blazes definitely need some extra variant or even an elite version in Minecraft 1.21.
