The Trails & Tales update, also known as Minecraft 1.20, is expected to be released by the end of Spring 2023. Mojang has promised a wide range of new content, such as mobs, blocks, items, and gameplay features, to enhance the gaming experience for fans. However, due to the sheer volume of new additions, it may seem overwhelming to digest all of the information, particularly with the early access Java snapshots and Bedrock previews providing players with more blocks.

In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase the 10 new blocks to use in Minecraft 1.20.

1. Cherry wood

In Minecraft, the Cherry tree is the 9th type of tree that can be found only in the Cherry grove biome. These trees are known for their large size and unique appearance with bright pink leaves and green branches that emit pink petal particles. They are not overcrowded and provide a great place for players to build their base.

A new Cherry wood set has been added to the game, which has a pink shade that can be used for various wooden objects. However, this feature is only visible if Update 1.20 experimental features are enabled.

To grow a Cherry tree, players need to obtain cherry saplings by breaking the leaves with a 50% chance of obtaining a sapling. Once obtained, the saplings can be planted on dirt and moss blocks with enough space around them for the tree to grow. Using bone meal on the saplings can speed up their growth, which takes about 10-20 minutes in real-time to become a full-sized Cherry tree.

2. Sniffer Egg

The Sniffer, a new mob, will be introduced in the 1.20 update after winning the Minecraft Mob Vote in 2022. However, when it was first introduced to the game's betas, it was unable to reproduce and didn't offer much gameplay. More recent snapshots and previews have allowed players to experience Sniffer Eggs firsthand, which are the latest egg block to appear following the Ender Dragon egg and turtle eggs.

Sniffer Eggs are particularly noteworthy because they serve as the means for players to discover the mob in Survival Mode. Given that Sniffers are ancient and were previously believed to be extinct, players must locate a Sniffer Egg in ocean ruins or suspicious sand blocks found in desert biomes. When hatching the egg, be sure to place it on moss, as this will reduce the time it takes for the egg to hatch into a Snifflet by half!

3. Chiseled bookshelves

In Minecraft, bookshelf blocks have always been a pleasant feature, but they weren't entirely accurate to their name. Although they powered up enchanting tables, players couldn't actually store books inside bookshelves. However, with the introduction of chiseled bookshelves, this changes.

Chiseled bookshelves can be created using six wooden planks and three wooden slabs, and they can hold up to six books in total. They can store a variety of books, including regular books, enchanted books, written books, and books with quills.

4. Calibrated sculk sensor

Minecraft's Caves & Cliffs update brought about the game-changing Sculk sensors, which enable wireless redstone creations in the game.

A new and improved version of the Sculk sensor has been introduced, allowing players to sort vibrations based on their frequency levels. This new feature enables players to design more complex and sophisticated redstone creations.

To craft the new item, players will need three amethyst shards and a Sculk sensor. It is worth noting that only one side of the block can receive a redstone signal as input, adding to its enigmatic nature within the game.

5. Piglin head

The Piglins can now drop their heads when killed by a charged creeper.

Additionally, with the release of Minecraft 1.20, Mojang is introducing a new mechanic that lets you place mob heads on note blocks to play ambient mob sounds. It is a fun new mechanic that players can use to pull pranks or as doorbells. For example, the creeper mob head makes the sound of an exploding creeper.

6. Bamboo wood

The upcoming update will allow bamboo blocks to function similarly to regular wood blocks in Minecraft. This means that players can use bamboo wood to craft bamboo planks, blocks, and other items. Furthermore, bamboo wood can be utilized to produce bamboo mosaic blocks, which have horizontal and vertical bamboo patterns. These blocks will serve as excellent decoration materials and can also be transformed into stairs and slabs.

7. Suspicious sand

To find suspicious sand blocks in Minecraft, players need to explore desert biomes, specifically buried rooms under desert pyramids and at the bottom of desert wells. It's important to note that these blocks are fragile and cannot be broken by hand or random tools. Instead, players need to use a brush tool, which can be crafted using a feather, copper ingot, and stick.

The chance of obtaining a pottery shard from a suspicious sand block is not guaranteed and depends on the type of block. Desert temple blocks have a 14% chance of dropping pottery shards, while desert well blocks have a 42.8% chance. Different blocks also have different drop rates and drop lists.

8. Decorated pots

Players can create decorated pots in Minecraft by using pottery shards, which they can obtain by excavating suspicious sand blocks. The formula for creating a decorated pot involves placing the shards in a specific arrangement, and players can use bricks as a substitute for any of the shards. However, it is also possible to create decorated pots without pottery shards by using only bricks.

At present, in the Minecraft 1.20 update, pottery shards do not have any other use. However, it is possible that Mojang will explore further possibilities for this concept in the future.

9. Torchflower

Minecraft has a new addition called Torchflower, a type of plant that can be grown from Torchflower seeds, which can only be obtained from Sniffers. These seeds can be planted on farmland and will grow into a flower. When players harvest Torchflower, they can use it to breed 2 Sniffers. Fully grown Torchflowers can also be planted to duplicate, and they can be crafted into dyes like other flowers in the game.

10. Hanging Sign

A more costly type of sign, known as Hanging Sign, is now available in Minecraft. To craft this sign, players will need 2 chains and 6 stripped logs, which will result in 6 Hanging Signs. There are 11 types of Hanging Signs available, including oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, crimson, warped, bamboo, and cherry.

Players can hang Hanging Signs in various ways, including underneath a block that provides support in the center, such as a fence or an iron bar, underneath a full block, attached to the solid side of a block, or attached to the side or underneath another Hanging Sign.
