Minecraft launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026. If you already own the digital version on the original Switch, you can get the Standard Edition for Switch 2 free through the Nintendo eShop in most regions. The offer ends at the end of January 2027.

Who Qualifies

Digital owners only. The free upgrade applies if the digital Minecraft license for Nintendo Switch is on your Nintendo Account. Physical cartridge owners do not receive a free Standard Edition. They can still play the original game on Switch 2 via backward compatibility, but without the native features. Some physical owners see an in-game message offering a discounted Ultimate Collection instead.

Exceptions apply in a few places: Japan (100 JPY), Taiwan (30 NTD), and Thailand (25 THB). Everywhere else the Standard Edition shows as free while the offer lasts.

How to Claim It

  • Turn on your Switch 2 and open the Nintendo eShop.
  • Sign in with the same Nintendo Account that owns your digital Switch copy of Minecraft.
  • Search for Minecraft and select the listing marked for Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Choose the Standard Edition. It should display as free (or the small regional fee). Confirm and download.

If the page shows the full $29.99 price, the wrong account is signed in. You can also check the listing on nintendo.com while logged into the same account. The claim is only available through the eShop.

What You Get

The native Switch 2 version includes Vibrant Visuals as the default look, with improved lighting, shadows, and other effects (not active in split-screen). It also adds the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with themed skins and music. Existing worlds from the original Switch version can transfer over so you can keep building and exploring without starting over. Online multiplayer still requires Nintendo Switch Online plus a Microsoft Account for cross-play.

Eligible owners can instead upgrade to the Deluxe Collection or Ultimate Collection at a discounted rate during the same window. After January 31, 2027, the free Standard path ends and the regular price applies. Claim it soon if you qualify so you can enjoy the updated visuals and continued gameplay on the new hardware.
