Minecraft closes out 2026 with its final game drop, arriving as Java Edition 26.4 and Bedrock Edition 26.70. The update focuses on cold underground areas and brings several changes that affect exploration, combat, and base building. Here are five features that stand out for actual gameplay.

1. Ice Caves

These new cave biomes generate beneath frozen, cold, and semi-cold surface biomes. Walls are mostly packed ice and calcite instead of stone, with snow patches, glowing ice crystals, and icicles that hang from the ceiling. Icicles can grow up to five blocks long and melt or fall when hit by light level 5 or higher.

  • Ores still spawn in pockets of stone and deepslate, making these caves useful for mining.
  • Crevasses covered in brittle ice crack and break under your feet, so bring blocks to bridge safely. Frostbites and strays walk on it without issues.

2. Calcite Block Set

Ice caves give you a reliable source of calcite, which previously came mainly from geodes and peaks. You can now craft or cut a full set including pillars, slabs, stairs, and walls. Four calcite make polished calcite, and four of those make polished calcite bricks, each with their own variants available at a stonecutter.

  • The blocks belong to the Slow Bouncy archetype, so they interact differently with sulfur cubes than regular stone.
  • Great for clean, pale building projects once you finish mining the caves.

3. Jukebox Playlists

Place a chest, trapped chest, or copper chest directly above a jukebox and fill it with music discs. The jukebox plays them in slot order, skips empty slots or non-discs, and loops automatically. Ejecting the current disc jumps to the next one.

  • A new disc called Flurry by Hyper Potions appears in some igloo basement chests (about 30 percent chance) and outputs a comparator signal of 7.
  • Useful for keeping music going in your base without constantly swapping discs.

4. Packed Ice and Snow Bricks

Four packed ice craft into packed ice bricks, which come with slabs, stairs, walls, and a chiseled variant. Unlike regular packed ice, these bricks are not slippery. Snow bricks work the same way from snow blocks and include slabs, stairs, and walls (though the snow variants cannot be cut at a stonecutter).

  • Packed ice bricks mine with a pickaxe and do not require Silk Touch. Snow bricks use a shovel.
  • Solid options for ice-themed floors and walls that players can walk on normally.

5. Frostbites and Freezing Mechanics

Frostbites are a zombie variant that spawn in ice caves and cold biomes. They switch between melee attacks that apply the Freezing effect and throwing ice balls. Defeating them drops ice balls, which you can throw for damage and knockback or brew into Potions of Freezing.

  • Freezing slows targets and deals damage over time, similar to standing in powder snow. Leather armor blocks the damage but does not remove the effect. Fire cancels it.
  • Blazes, magma cubes, and striders take five times the damage, making splash potions useful against them. You can also craft arrows of freezing.

These additions give cold biomes more reasons to visit while expanding building options and combat tools. Features are already testable in current snapshots and previews ahead of the full Q4 2026 release.
