Subnautica 2 drops players into a fresh alien ocean on a mysterious new planet. The waters hide colossal creatures known as Leviathans. These massive beasts range from aggressive hunters to passive titans. As the game sits in Early Access, five Leviathans have been officially confirmed through gameplay, trailers, and developer updates. More will likely arrive in future patches. Here is everything we know about each one, including locations, behaviors, and survival tips to help you explore safely.

Collector Leviathan

This enormous cephalopod predator resembles a giant squid crossed with something far more alien. It features a long armored mantle, four powerful hunting tentacles tipped with sharp bioglass claws, and a massive beak strong enough to rip through titanium plating. Bioluminescent patterns glow across its body, especially around its W-shaped pupils and broadcast organ that lets it send complex sonar pulses. Solitary and highly intelligent, the Collector specializes in cracking open hard-shelled prey like coral crabs or even other Leviathans. It shows strong curiosity toward submersibles and habitats, which often leads to aggressive attacks.

Locations: Graveyard, Root Canyon, Outer Bounds, and Sparse Plains. It prefers deep-sea areas but can roam into mid-depth zones.

Behavior and tips: Extremely aggressive once it spots you. It chases relentlessly and uses its thrusters for sudden bursts of speed. Stay in shallow waters or use terrain to break line of sight. Scanning it rewards valuable data, but keep your distance. Avoid lingering near its possible prey to reduce encounters.

Shiver Leviathan

A sleek, dark-blue predator with a protruding bone skull and pointed fins that act like stabbing weapons. Males are smaller and faster, while the massive females lead the hunt. The Shiver looks almost skeletal or bird-like underwater, with powerful jaws designed for one-shot kills.

Locations: The Void and Dead Zones. These are dangerous edge-of-map areas where building is restricted.

Behavior and tips: Hunts in packs. A female often sends smaller males to pursue intruders while the group surrounds from all sides. Contact with its jaws means instant death, even in vehicles. The best strategy is to leave the Void immediately if you detect one. Scanning both males and females is possible for extra lore, but only if you can escape quickly.

Deepwing Brooder Leviathan

A docile, hovering giant that appears almost anywhere across the map. It travels in loose packs and releases clouds of eggs into the water column. Its "brooding" behavior suggests it plays a role in the ecosystem by spreading life rather than hunting.

Locations: Open water anywhere. Sightings are common in mid-to-deep layers.

Behavior and tips: Non-aggressive toward players. It poses no direct threat, but its eggs or pack movements can obscure vision or attract other predators. Treat it as a scenic wonder and avoid colliding with it while piloting vehicles.

Great Jaw Leviathan

This bizarre creature looks like a giant clam or bobbit-worm hybrid. A massive shell hides a toothy interior lined with glowing eyeballs. Long appendages extend outward, ready to snap shut and trap anything nearby. Once inside, it releases toxins that can quickly overwhelm even reinforced suits.

Locations: Shallows and open ocean areas.

Behavior and tips: Ambush predator. It stays mostly stationary until something swims too close. Watch for the telltale tentacles or glowing mouth. If trapped, immediate escape tools or a quick boost from your vehicle may be your only hope. Avoid shallow zones with poor visibility.

The World Tree

A true titan-class Leviathan and quite possibly the largest creature in Subnautica 2. This mysterious giant resembles a colossal tree-like structure rising from the depths. It remains dormant for now, so it does not actively hunt or attack.

Locations: Northeast of the Lifepod, visible on the horizon when surfacing from deep water. Multiple instances may exist across the map.

Behavior and tips: Currently passive and tied to story progression. Scan reports and story elements reveal more about it over time. No immediate danger, but its sheer scale can disorient navigation. Approach with caution only after unlocking relevant story milestones, as future updates may change its state.

Subnautica 2's Leviathans feel fresh and terrifying compared to the original game's roster. They fit the new planet's ecosystem perfectly, blending intelligence, pack tactics, and sheer size. Early Access means the list could grow soon. Whether you are scanning for the PDA, surviving a chase, or simply admiring these ocean giants from afar, always keep your oxygen high and your wits higher. The deep rewards the prepared explorer. Stay safe out there.
