Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier says the story of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in Grand Theft Auto 6 leans closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than to GTA 5. Schreier reached that view after visiting Rockstar Games and watching co-studio head Rob Nelson play a hands-off session built around the couple.
A Relationship Built in the Open World
In the demo, Jason called Lucia to meet up. A single button press made him kiss her when she arrived. The pair then walked through a park holding hands, drove to a gym, and trained together while Jason did squats and Lucia ran on a treadmill. They also scouted a bank as a potential target before calling off the job because of too many guards. Later they slipped into the back office of a petrol station, disabled an alarm, and left with the cash without drawing attention.
These small moments show how the game lets you bring the two characters together whenever you want. Unlike GTA 5, where Michael, Franklin, and Trevor often insulted each other and worked separately, Jason and Lucia appear to enjoy each other's company. Their bond is optional. You can treat them as romantic partners or simply as partners in crime. Spending time together in the open world, answering texts, or doing activities shapes how their story plays out, though Rockstar has said there are no gameplay bonuses for keeping the relationship strong.
Systems Inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar has confirmed that player choices, both big and small, will affect the narrative. Jason and Lucia each have a Criminal Profile that changes based on how you commit crimes. This system works like the Honor meter in Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur Morgan's behavior altered dialogue and certain story moments. Safehouses in GTA 6 are also designed more like the interactable camps from Red Dead Redemption 2 than traditional GTA homes, giving the characters a place that feels lived-in.
Rob Nelson has said the team looked at how much of a character belongs to the player versus the written story, an idea they explored most carefully with Arthur Morgan. The result is a more grounded approach. While GTA 6 still includes the series' satirical tone, the central relationship aims for emotional weight instead of constant arguments and cartoonish excess.
What This Means for the Story
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. Early impressions suggest players will spend as much time building Jason and Lucia's connection as they do pulling off heists. Whether that bond stays romantic or stays professional is up to the player, but the two characters remain linked throughout the campaign.
