Mods are a big deal in Minecraft, and some clever folks have turned the usual blocky survival game into an awesome real-time strategy (RTS) experience that barely looks like the original.

When you picture Minecraft, you probably think of wide-open spaces, stacks of blocks, and total freedom to explore, mine, craft, build, or fight off enemies after dark. But mods shake things up, and some skilled modders have transformed Minecraft into a legit RTS game worth checking out.

What is Reign of Nether?

If you’re curious about what this mod’s all about before downloading, here’s the deal.

Reign of Nether flips Minecraft into a top-down real-time strategy game, kind of like Minecraft Dungeons. It’s all about combat, with players roaming the world and taking out monsters.

You can pick from three factions: Villagers, Monsters, or Piglins. Each has its own unique gameplay, like different building options, reactions to sunlight, or construction limits.

Plus, there are four game modes to choose from:

  • Classic: Wipe out all your opponents’ buildings to win.
  • Wave Survival: Hold off waves of enemies each night, solo or with friends.
  • King of the Beacon: Battle to control a central Beacon.
  • Sandbox: Build your own custom map with units and structures.

You can farm, get villagers to build stuff, set up traps and alarms, and plan out strategies to defend your base. You’ll be fighting alongside (or against) Ghasts, Iron Golems, Villagers, Pillagers, Wither Skeletons, and pretty much anything else you can imagine.
