Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will include more than 170 animal species across Leonida, the Florida-inspired state that hosts Vice City. Game Informer's September 2026 cover story put a number on the roster: about 60 birds, more than 30 land mammals, and a spread of fish and reptiles. Most individual names still come from trailers, screenshots, and hands-on previews rather than a full official list.

On land

The confirmed sightings already cover a lot of Florida chaos. Alligators wander swamps and, in classic trailer fashion, a backyard pool and a convenience store. Deer, wild boars, bobcats, and cougars turn up in rural and wilderness shots. Smaller residents include raccoons, squirrels, beavers, otters, and nine-banded armadillos. Invasive species get a nod too: green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, and rhesus macaque monkeys. Domestic life is present as well. Cats show up in town, and dogs spotted so far include Chihuahuas, Dobermans, German Shepherds, and Rottweilers. Snakes round out the land list.

In the water

Water is just as busy. Dolphins ride near boats, sharks and whales occupy open water, and manatees, sea turtles, eels, and jellyfish have all been identified in footage or previews. Fish fill the gaps, even if Rockstar has not named every species yet. Some preview coverage also points to rays alongside the sharks and turtles.

In the air

Birds are the biggest group on paper. Flamingos, pelicans, spoonbills, cranes, storks, and ducks dominate wetland frames. Eagles, woodpeckers, pigeons, and seagulls cover the rest of the sky and the streets. Rockstar has said the bird count alone sits around 60, so this is only the visible slice.

How the wildlife plays

Rockstar is building on its Red Dead Redemption animal work. Fur and feathers react to weather, and some creatures will show iridescence, bioluminescence, and translucency. Players can track certain animals tagged Rare, Discoverable, or Legendary, though those identities are still secret. Hunting has already shown up in preview screenshots, with Jason staking out deer in the wild. The full 170 will not be public until launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
