Minecraft’s got some wild mob combos called jockeys, where one creature hitches a ride on another. These rare spawns mix up gameplay with their quirky behaviors, like a skeleton sniping from a spider’s back or a baby zombie cruising on a chicken. They pop up naturally in the game, following the spawning rules of the bottom mob, and can be a real surprise in both Java and Bedrock Editions. Here’s the rundown on all the jockeys you might run into.
1. Spider Jockey
A skeleton (or in Bedrock, maybe a wither skeleton or stray) chilling on a spider or cave spider.
Spawn Details:
- Java Edition: 1% shot when a spider spawns, always with a skeleton rider.
- Bedrock Edition: Also 1% for spiders or cave spiders. In the Nether, 80% chance it’s a wither skeleton; in snowy spots, 80% for a stray. Baby zombies can hop on spiders too since Update 0.14.0.
The skeleton’s popping arrows while the spider scurries and climbs walls. On Hard Mode in Java, spiders might get buffs like Speed or Invisibility, making things hairy.
You get spider stuff (string, spider eyes) and skeleton loot (bones, arrows, maybe a bow).
2. Chicken Jockey
A baby zombie, zombified piglin, zombie villager, husk, or drowned riding a chicken.
Spawn Details:
- Java Edition: 5% chance a baby zombie grabs a nearby chicken in a 10×6×10 area. If no chickens are around, a 0.25% chance to spawn one; with chickens, it’s about 0.4875%.
- Bedrock Edition: 15% chance a baby zombie jumps on a chicken (or other mobs like cows) when chasing players, villagers, or iron golems.
The zombie steers, speeding up the chicken and making it immune to fall damage. In Bedrock, zombies might pick other rides, so pure chicken jockeys are less common.
Chicken drops feathers and raw chicken; zombies drop rotten flesh and sometimes gear like golden swords or drowned tridents. These blew up in A Minecraft Movie (2025), with fans going nuts in theaters.
3. Skeleton Horseman (Skeleton Trap)
A skeleton on a skeleton horse, usually spawning in groups of four.
Spawn Details:
Shows up in thunderstorms when a lone skeleton horse gets zapped by lightning or a player gets too close (within 10 blocks). Lightning spawns four of these bad boys.
Super rare due to needing a storm and specific triggers.
The skeleton shoots arrows, and the horse’s speed makes them tough to catch. They’re like mini-bosses in Minecraft Dungeons. Kill the skeleton, and you can tame the horse for a speedy ride with a five-block jump.
Skeleton drops bones, arrows, and maybe a bow; the horse drops nothing unless you kill it.
4. Ravager Jockey
A pillager, vindicator, or evoker riding a ravager during raids.
Spawn Details:
- Java Edition: Pops up in raids, with certain waves guaranteeing them (e.g., wave 5 has a pillager-ravager, wave 7 has pillager and evoker-ravagers).
- Bedrock Edition: Up to five can spawn per raid, guaranteed in waves 5 and 7.
The rider calls the shots, but the ravager’s melee hits are separate, sometimes even smacking the rider. They’re a nightmare with both ranged and close-up attacks.
Ravagers drop saddles and sometimes emeralds; riders drop stuff like crossbows (pillagers) or totems of undying (evokers).
5. Strider Jockey
A zombified piglin or baby strider on a strider in the Nether.
Spawn Details:
Both Editions: 0.033% chance for a zombified piglin to spawn on a strider. Baby striders can also ride adults naturally.
They’re chill unless you mess with them, with the piglin steering.
The strider cruises on lava, guided by the rider. They won’t bug you unless you start something. Striders drop string; zombified piglins drop rotten flesh, gold nuggets, and sometimes golden swords.
6. Hoglin Jockey
A baby piglin on a baby hoglin.
Spawn Details:
Rare in the Nether, only in Bedrock Edition. The piglin’s stuck on the hoglin once it mounts. They’re neutral unless you poke them, with the piglin in charge. Not too scary since baby piglins don’t carry weapons.
Hoglins drop raw porkchop and leather; piglins might drop gold nuggets.
7. Other Bedrock-Exclusive Jockeys
In Bedrock, baby zombies, husks, or zombie villagers can ride all sorts of mobs when they’re after you (15% chance), starting from Update
0.14.0. These include:
- Wolf Jockey: Baby zombie on a hostile wolf, but this was a bug and got axed in Update 0.12.1.
- Cow Jockey: Baby zombie on a cow, also a bug removed in Update 0.12.1.
- Pig Jockey: Baby zombie on a pig.
- Mooshroom Jockey: Baby zombie on a mooshroom.
- Zombie Jockey: Baby zombie on an adult zombie, zombified piglin, husk, or zombie villager.
- Other Mounts: They can ride ocelots, cats, sheep, horses, and more, but these are super rare.
The baby zombie takes control, turning peaceful mobs hostile. These are less common since the mob variety spreads out the chances. Depend on the mount and rider, like leather from cows or rotten flesh from zombies.
