Released exactly 5 years ago, the 2D action-platformer Risk of Rain from developer Hopoo Games was well-received by many. Currently on Steam, it has a positive feedback rate of 93% out of nearly 16,000 reviews. Its sequel, titled Risk of Rain 2, was first revealed in late 2017. Since then, updates about this sequel has been scarce. Today, however, Hopoo has shared that it plans to release the game for Early Access at the beginning of 2019.
Right from the first announcement in 2017, Risk of Rain 2 is revealed to be a third-person shooter game that takes place in a 3D environment, which means it will go in a significantly different route than its predecessor. Then, in May this year, Hopoo Games published a video that showed footages of the game, and stated that this sequel would bring new classes, monsters, bosses, items and levels in addition to the ones featured in the original game.
Risk of Rain 2 Gameplay
Now, with the latest update, the studio has confirmed that Risk of Rain 2 is going to have melee classes, one of which will be the Mercenary from the first Risk of Rain. The developers shared that they decided to bring this character to the sequel because they thought his dashes would be fun in a 3D environment and would allow him to reach monsters in the air.
The melee characters will need a little bit more attention to ensure that they can perform well in the new 3D environment of Risk of Rain 2, but the developers shared that they “are very excited to have them in the game.”
With this Early Access launch, Hopoo Games wants to achieve 3 specific goals: Establishing a community, "avoiding content drought," and getting feedback from players. According to the studio, players can often provide great ideas that can turn a good game into a really fantastic one. With RoR2 being its first 3D game, Hopoo says that it really needs feedback from players in order to ensure that the game will deliver on the expectation.
If you are interested in this game, you can go on Steam right now to add it to your wishlist.
