Valve has updated Steam’s gifting system and wishlists. Announced on July 22, 2026, the changes make it far simpler to surprise friends and family with games no matter where they live or whether they have a Steam account. Features include expanded guest checkout, email gifting, cross-region support, relaxed friendship rules, and new custom categories with better sharing tools.
Guest Checkout and Email Gifting
Guest checkout now works for any game. Friends can buy from a shared wishlist link without a Steam account. Games and gift cards can also be sent directly to email. Recipients get a sign-in link to claim the gift. Unclaimed email gifts refund after 30 days. Email gifts require the same country as the buyer.
Cross-Region Gifting and Wishlist Improvements
Direct cross-region gifting is now available. Steam calculates the price for the recipient’s region at checkout (friends list still required for this). Wishlist sharing is more flexible: gift directly from lists, no friendship needed in many cases, filtered share links for specific games or categories, and auto-filled carts. Guest checkout works on shared links.
New Custom Categories and Tools
Players can create custom categories like “Birthday ideas” or “Controller games.” Filter wishlists easily, control notifications, and assign categories quickly from store pages. Other upgrades include faster search with autocomplete, demo indicators and alerts, hover microtrailers, improved navigation across devices, and better readability. Share links can target full lists, categories, or filtered views—even private ones—and can be revoked anytime. Family can gift directly from shared categories.
