The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Update 1.2 dropped on July 16, 2025, for all platforms after a Steam Beta test starting July 9. It brings better performance, new difficulty options, bug fixes, and some handy tweaks to make the game smoother.

1. New Difficulty Settings

You can now mess with Player Combat Damage and Enemy Combat Damage sliders in the Gameplay menu to tweak how tough fights are. They also added Journeyman Difficulty, which sits between Adept (too easy) and Expert (pretty brutal), making the game feel more balanced since the old level scaling could make leveling up feel pointless.

2. Performance Improvements

This update tackles a bunch of performance hiccups from the game’s launch, especially on consoles. They smoothed out:

  • Stutters when moving around the open world.
  • Frame rate drops in some dungeons.
  • Rendering for water, waterfalls, weather, lighting, shadows, and character animations.
  • Updates for character attachments.

They also fixed crashes tied to auto-saves, fighting Jyggalag, and GPU issues. Camera positioning on horseback is better now, fixing some visual glitches. That said, some players say stutters still happen, just less often.

3. Bug Fixes

They patched up some quest issues:

  • Fixed NPC pathing in the "Through the Fringe of Madness" quest in Shivering Isles.
  • Restored missing visual effects during the Great Gate closing.
  • Changed the Dark Brotherhood’s Cheydinhal sanctuary door to show five kids instead of seven to match the Night Mother’s lore (not in the official notes, but players spotted it).

Other fixes include NPC beards moving properly with faces and spell effects (like light spells) working right without needing to switch cameras.

4. Quality-of-Life Improvements

Settings now carry over better, so you don’t lose your tweaks. The update plays nice with mods like the Ultra Combat UE4SS mod (adds dodge and guard mechanics) and others for lighting or animations. The Emperor’s Robes got better physics for a sharper look.

5. Platform Availability

The update hit Steam Beta on July 9, 2025, where players could opt in via:

  1. Going to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered in Steam Library.
  2. Right-clicking, picking "Properties," then "Betas."
  3. Selecting "[beta]" and downloading.

It rolled out to all platforms (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S) on July 16, with a download size of 8.6 GB on PC and 4.7 GB on PS5. Bethesda’s taking feedback on their Discord.

Additional Notes

The Dark Brotherhood door fix wasn’t in the official notes but was a nice touch for lore fans. The Unofficial Oblivion Remastered Patch (UORP) is still fixing bugs Bethesda missed. No word on more patches, but players are hoping for further performance tweaks.
