Star Wars video games were pretty big back in the 90s, with LucasArts produced hits upon hits on many genres, from shooters to RPGs and even simulation. In the past, those Star Wars games were PC only, mostly controlled using keyboard & mouse, sometimes with a joystick attached. With EA trying to revitalize the franchise with multiple titles like Battlefront and the recently released Fallen Order, our list would help you discover some of the best Star Wars games from the last generation. This list is not ranked in any order, as the games are vastly different.

Republic Commando

One of the best tactical FPS in the PS2 era for Star Wars fans, Republic Commando was definitely a big hit. In this game, you would step inside the boots of a clone captain, leader of a squad of soldiers. The gameplay has taken cues from various games such as Halo, Freedom Fighters and Metroid Prime, with various futuristic weapons and 3 campaigns spawn on multiple planets.

The best part of the game is your ability to order your teammates around – they are really responsive and innovative: you can either order the squad to blow things up, focus on an enemy or take control of a tactical location.

Empire At War

One of the few Star Wars real-time strategy games ever released, Empire at War has definitely been successful in capturing the Star Wars magic, with both space and ground battles included. The multiplayer component of the game is still online currently after the developers switched it on again in September.

In Empire at War, the player would get to take part in almost every part of the Galactic Civil War. There are just that many things to do, from sending your forces all over the galaxy to managing and regulating resource productions or even sending spaceships and bands of soldiers into combat.

The game’s campaign is based on a comic book series and novel of the same name. The player would take on the role of Luke Skywalker (and Wedge Antilles in the last mission), fighting against the empire in 15 missions on various locations in the Star Wars universe. The battles are all in planetary surface level – from the sands of Tatooine to the mines of Kessel, they have got every famous location in one package.

With the settings of Kotor being five thousand years before the main canon, the developers have enabled themselves creative freedom to do just about anything without the constraint of the canon.

Knights of the Old Republic is definitely one of the best Star Wars games ever made, as its excellent stories with all the twists and turns were combined with great creative designs and amazing gameplay. Step into the shoes of a young Jedi and embark on a journey to destroy the Sith's newest weapon, the Star Forge.

Star Wars Galaxies

The first successful Star Wars MMO

Star Wars Galaxies was an MMO with almost limitless potential that almost changed the world. It was the first subscription-based MMORPG build on the universe of Star Wars. The best part of the game is the skill-based progression system, which gives players a lot of freedom to build their own character and pick out the skills of their own choosing. This was removed after several expansions, however, as a rather conventional class system was implemented.

Contains the best lightsaber combat ever made in any Star Wars game to date, Jedi Outcast is definitely one of the best entries amongst the entire expanded universe “legend” timelines

In this game, players will take on the mantle of Kyle Katarn, Luke’s apprentice, a Jedi who sits somewhere in the grey area between the light and the dark side of the force. The game contains some of the best action combat sequences since the original Half-Life, an amazing control mechanic, and one of the best plots since the first Jedi Knight.

The settings of the game were five years after the event of the first Kotor, following the Exile, a Jedi Knight that was banished from the Jedi Order. During that time, the Order was pushed to the brink of extinction by the Sith. After waking up on a mining facility on an asteroid, the protagonist would have to escape the place and find the person who exiled them years ago, who in turn would send them on another mission: to find the last remaining Jedi to restore the order and fight against the Sith.

The gameplay is still the same as the first game but more optimized, with more force powers and weapons options added so that players would be able to tinker their playstyle to whatever they see fit.

Nothing beats the lightsaber combat in Jedi Academy

Jedi Academy has one of the best lightsaber combat system, easy to play, hard to master. You would get the Jedi powers and a lightsaber right from the beginning – Jedi Academy places heavy emphasis on lightsaber combat, with various customizations that can be made to the saber, along with the three battle stances. There are unique move sets for each weapon, and they would also change based on the stances you are using.

A shooter based on the Star Wars universe, Battlefront 2 is a sequel to the 2004 Battlefront, with the same gameplay and various additions to the usual mechanics. In this game, you would step inside the boots of an Imperial Stormtrooper, who has served in both the Galactic Republic and Empire. The main part of Battlefront is a campaign contains bits and pieces of the main Star Wars story, from the perspective of an Imperial Agent. Quite a few new modes were added to multiplayer such as hero assault and space battles.

TIE Fighter

The main campaign of the game happens during episode 5 of the original trilogy, after the Empire’s victory on the ice planet Hoth. Players would be facing the Rebel Alliance flying a TIE Fighter, combat in small skirmishes against pirates and traitorous Imperial forces.

The way it is played is similar to the X-Wing series, as you can play in both first and third person. All fights would happen in space, without any complications from atmospheric effects and gravity. The progression system would get better over time, as the player gets access to more advanced TIE variants.
