The list of Horror games seem to be quiet during last year, but next year is going to be different, firstly with the introduction of Resident Evil 2 in the late January. Next year, undoubtfully, more products will be coming that are promised to terrify their players with creative plot twists. Plenty of motifs have been developed, from the ancient vibe of Nordic to the mysterious of Roswell, and gamers have a lot to choose from. The list below are the nine most promising games that have been narrowed down from 40 examined games that surely will make your 2019 more frightening but in a positive way.

Apsulov: End of Gods

One piece of advice from this game: once you dig up an object that is not supposed to be there, you should wonder why it was buried. Developed by Angry Demon Studio, Apsulov: End of Gods is described as the "future Viking horror game". In this horror game, the mysterious object that you found was able to destroy Midgard (the human realm). This is an amazingly successful mixture of Nordic mythology and modern science fiction that evokes your desire to protect the world from the awakening of Nordic Gods.

The Beast Inside

A cryptanalyst left the city of Boston and moved to the wood just to find out that he is hunted by the killer that conducted a crime happened more than 100 years ago. The time-traveling killer did not want him to discover any clues of the murder. He must uncover the murder from the Civil War in order to solve the present case. The Beast Inside opens a small world with parallel time dimensions where players have to control the protagonist in two different time periods. This is more of a case-solving game with puzzles and codes that need to be deciphered, but the cryptanalyst as the main character will also have a gun to deal with unexpected threats. This game is yet to be available, but according to developer Illusion Ray Studio, it is coming really soon.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

Man of Medan is developed by the same people behind the famous choice-driven slasher game Until Dawn, Supermassive Games. This developer seems to have more thriller stories in their ways and are planning to publish a whole series for this genre. Man of Medan is similar to Until Dawn when it comes to design and graphics, and this game seems to be the first story of the series. A team of American sailors hailed to the South Pacific and discovered a ship from World War II and decided to find out what was inside. They did not find anything of their interest and being caught by a storm instead. They have to manage to get out of the boat before the crew cut them down.

Layers of Fear 2

Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock, Layers of Fears 2 will have some classic theater’s features, but art and the surprising elements are still what it focuses on. The developer Bloober Team wishes to confuse players by forcing them to make a second guess of what they have just witnessed. Tony Todd, the Candyman in the movie under the same name is the storyteller of the game. Layers of Fears 2 has not revealed which platforms it will be available on yet, although we can guess it would be PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

Pathologic 2

Released in 2005, Pathologic expected to be a total blockbuster. Back then, its artworks were poor and its operation was full of errors, but after all, its ambitions were beyond expectation. Players will control a group that is trying to save the village from an infectious disease. The game feature non-play characters who have their own schedules, timed tasks, paths that can lead you to literally everywhere, and a gloomy atmosphere. The developer’s effort to remake this game with a new version will, hopefully, bring the game to a new level and enable it to scare the gamers from an entirely new generation.

The Peterson Case

You will be playing a detective who takes over the case of a missing family near Roswell, New Mexico. To find out what happened to them, you have to investigate their ơn house, but as easy as this may sound, it is a cursed mission to complete. The house is full of abnormal phenomenon and objects such as ghosts, symbols. You are a great detective who already has your own idea on how to solve this case, but, ironically, you can die or disappear in this house, just like the victims.

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 is another remake, and the original game was on PlayStation since 1998. Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield were 2 characters that were lost in the city of Raccoon and surrounded by zombies. The main plot was the same, but the gameplay and the twisted are entirely new. This game received positive feedback from Imran Khan of the Game Informer: "I went into the Resident Evil 2 remake looking to recapture that same feeling, but found that Capcom wasn’t trying to recreate a moment-in-time with the horror revival as much as they were trying to recontextualize it."

The Sinking City

Inspired by the works of the American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, Frogwares decided to turn to thriller games instead of continuing with its classic Sherlock Holmes investigation games. In The Sinking City, players have to find out the reason that the entire city of Oakmont, Massachusetts in the 1920s was going mad. The main character of the game was investigator Charles W. Reed. While everyone suspected that Cthulhu had something to do with the case, he did not agree and kept on investigating. He had to question peoples and observes the surrounding landscape to find any clues, petty much like Sherlock Holmes. Some combat and action moves are also featured.

Unholy

Unholy is a first-person stealth/horror game where you will be in the role of Saidah, a mother whose daughter had been missing. She went to a dying planet to find her and your role will be helping her with how to approach each scenario: sneaking through the guards or murdering them? Each action, according to developer Duality Games, will lead to different consequences. We would have to wait to see what it really means, but one thing we are sure of: if we go one step wrong, the mother will become insane.
