While the practice of worshiping of Norse Gods has pretty much been erased even in its originating region, the Norse Mythology has become one of the biggest and most influential mythos in modern entertainment. From comic books to movies to video games, the number of times characters from the Nordic myth was included is absurd – and the trend is not going to stop any time soon. The next game in the Assassin’s Creed series is going to be Nordic-themed – it is even named Valhalla. In this article, we would list out some of the most interesting facts about the location that you might not know.

1 – Myth Overview

In Norse legends, Valhalla is the great hall of Odin, Father of the Aesir Gods. The palace is located in Asgard, gathering all the heroic warriors slain in battle. In here, they enjoyed a splendid afterlife filled with feasts and pleasure… in preparation for the End of the World “Ragnarok”. When that time comes, the warriors would join the Aesir gods in a final battle against the evil forces. The castle has 640 doors, filled with weapons and armors, along with endless food and booze.

The Valkyries are Odin’s battle maidens, whose job is to collect the warriors who are worthy enough to be in Valhalla. The rest who are unworthy (a.k.a people not died in battles) would be damned to Hel – a dreaded wasteland ruled by the evil god Hela.

2 – Valhalla In Context

Nordic people valued bravery and warfare over anything - this is probably their most important trait. Due to the fact that they live in barren, cold lands in the north, the majority part of their resources would have to be gathered by raids and attacks on other coastal towns.

We would probably be doing the same thing in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – with the trailer being all about raiding and burning villages in Britain. It is unsure about the fate of the characters, however, as the opponents they are facing defeated the Viking invasions in history.

3 – Key Themes And Symbols

Fighting and dying in battle is the most glorious thing in that culture

For the Vikings, Valhalla stands for the final rewards of bravery in battle. The location also represented the ideal life for people in that culture: all the food, drink and song, beautiful maiden servants, and an opportunity to fight in a final battle. This is actually a common theme in all earlier religions – as the past is the time of warfare, and people with the ability to fight and protect the community would be glorified.

The Norse’s halls of warriors have been one of the most popular parts of the modern depiction of the mythos. It has been included in various comics both Marvel and DC – with its Valkyries appeared in the recent Ragnarok movie. They have also appeared in the popular God of War 4 game on the PS4 - this time as elite enemies. In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, it is likely that the storyline would be linked with the end of the world and how the Assassins would go against it.
