Ananta, previously called Project Mugen, first popped up nine months ago and came off as one more title echoing Genshin Impact from the Chinese outfit Naked Rain. Turns out, it's shaping up to offer way more than that, judging by the fresh gameplay footage dropped right before Tokyo Game Show 2025, where attendees can actually get hands-on with it.
NetEase Games, the folks behind the release, pitches Ananta as an urban open-world RPG packed with player choice, where you switch between various characters. But the trailer's got this upcoming free-to-play action RPG pulling clear inspiration from Marvel’s Spider-Man, Sleeping Dogs, Grand Theft Auto, Watch Dogs, and even those Yakuza-inspired side gigs. For something hitting PlayStation 5, PC, Android, and iOS without a price tag, it packs a serious punch.
This seven-minute clip rolls out the main crew, including Captain, Taffy, Richie, and Seymour. Standout moments cover interactive zones scattered on the map that spark random encounters—like stroking cats or diving into street brawls—plus high-speed urban chases, eavesdropping on strangers' devices, and zipping through the city with Spider-Man-esque moves. It dips into the fighting mechanics too, which echo Sleeping Dogs and come across as genuinely engaging for an anime-style action RPG.
A bunch of players are worn out by all these Genshin Impact copies flooding the market these days, and that's fair. Still, it's tough to overlook the top-notch polish or the sheer volume of features these titles deliver. We might end up with a solid anime Grand Theft Auto stand-in long before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives.
