Persona 5: The Phantom X is a turn-based RPG that branches off from Persona 5. It keeps the core combat style but mixes things up with more options for building your team and planning your moves.
TEAM COMPOSITION
In P5X, your team usually has Wonder plus three other characters and a Navigator.
When your characters or Personas share the same attribute, they can set off Harmony, which pumps up the damage for that attribute’s skills. When Wonder swaps Personas in battle, it can change which Harmony kicks in, depending on the active Persona’s attribute.
DOWN GAUGE AND KNOCKDOWN
Some enemies (and your crew) have a Down Gauge to block Knockdowns. The Shield icon by an enemy’s HP shows how many hits with a weak attribute or a Sword/Gun Critical Hit it takes to break the Shield. For example, if it’s 2, you need two hits to crack the Shield, then one more to Knockdown the enemy.
ELEMENTS, 1 MORE, AND ALL-OUT ATTACK
Every character and enemy has specific attribute strengths and weaknesses. Here’s how they work:
- WEAK - The enemy takes extra damage from this attribute, and it chips away at the Down Gauge or Knocks them down. A Physical or Gun Critical Hit always cuts the Down Gauge or Knocks down, too.
- RESIST - The enemy shrugs off this attribute, taking less damage. Critical Hits with Physical or Gun still work to reduce the Down Gauge or Knockdown.
- NULL - The enemy’s immune to this attribute, so attacks do zero damage.
- REPEL - The enemy bounces this attribute back, hitting the attacker instead.
- ABSORB - The enemy soaks up this attribute, healing HP instead of taking damage.
Some extra details on related mechanics:
- 1 MORE - Knocking down an enemy triggers 1 MORE, which is like a bonus attack, not a full extra turn. Each character gets one 1 MORE per round.
- All-Out Attack - When all enemies are Knocked down, you can unleash an All-Out Attack, hitting everyone. Damage ramps up with more allies joining in. You can pull this off even if the Protagonist is out of action.
SPEED AND TURNS
Speed in P5X mostly decides your team’s turn order and how often your characters dodge enemy hits. High Speed doesn’t give extra moves, but some characters with Extra Turn mechanics can act more than once.
SWEEP
Material Stages don’t have a sweep option, but you can grab up to 5x the rewards from one clear if you’ve got enough stamina.
CHARACTERS
Each character has a main attribute, but their skills often mix in other(elements or types. They’re split into roles (names are fan-translated from Chinese and might differ in the official release):
- Rebel – Single-target DPS
- Domination – AoE DPS
- Vanguard – Tank
- Superior – Buffer support
- Submit – Debuffer support
- Elucidate – Off-field support (aka Navigators)
STATS
- Attack – Boosts most skills’ damage. Most characters scale with this.
- Defense – Cuts incoming damage. Some characters scale here.
- HP – Raises max HP. Certain characters scale with this.
- Damage Bonus – Ups overall damage dealt.
- Effect Hit Rate – Improves chances of landing debuffs.
- Critical Rate – Odds of scoring Critical Hits.
- Critical Damage – Boosts Critical Hit damage.
- Speed – Sets turn order; some characters scale with it.
- SP Regen % – Increases SP recovery from items or skills.
- Penetration % – Ignores a chunk of enemy Defense before Defense Down debuffs apply.
ARCANA CARDS
Arcana Cards act like Armor and Accessories from traditional RPGs, unlike Persona 5’s single slot for each. Equipping them boosts stats like HP, Attack, Speed, and more, making them a big part of powering up your characters.
GAME MODES
P5X has seven main modes: four casual ones—Heart Rail, Tycoon, Tartarus, and Velvet Trials—and three endgame ones—Sea of Souls Trials, Door of Nightmares, and Astrolabe Trials. Some might not be available right away in the English version.
GACHA
There are four banner types:
- Permanent Banner – Includes all standard characters.
- Limited Rate-up Banners – Feature a limited 5★ character for a short time.
- Rerun Banners – Bring back limited characters for longer periods.
- Super Rerun Banners – Special banners where you pick up to three characters for Rate-up.
Character banners have two pity systems: one guarantees the Rate-up 5★ after a high pull count with a lower base rate; the other is a 50/50 shot at the Rate-up or a Permanent 5★ at a lower pull count with a higher base rate, guaranteeing the Rate-up on the next pity if you lose the 50/50.
GUILD SYSTEM
P5X’s Guild system, called Paradise, unlocks at Wonder level 40 with a sidequest introducing it. Here’s the deal:
How to Join/Create a Paradise
After hitting the right story point and level, you can join or create a Paradise. Creating one costs 200 premium currency and supports up to 30 members. As the owner, you can set the name, description, icon, tags, minimum application level, and manage members (promote or kick).
What can you do in a Paradise
The big draw is unlocking the Door of Nightmares (guild boss)—check the Game Modes guide for more. You can also swap your player avatar from your character pool and chat with other members.
