Honkai Star Rail just added a new mode in version 3.7 called Currency Wars. It features teams of 10 characters, fresh team effects, attack animations, and rewards. It's a permanent mode where rewards, mechanics, and enemies reset every few days, like the others. Dive into our full guide on HSR Currency Wars to get ahead and master it first.

How to Play Currency Wars in Honkai Star Rail

Currency Wars is a brand new mode in Honkai Star Rail, pretty different from the others. It's easier to get into than Anomaly Arbitration. While some mechanics overlap, the gameplay is unique, so you'll need to start fresh. Here's everything you need to know for HSR Currency Wars.

How to Get Characters in Currency Wars

You're probably curious about getting characters in Currency Wars. The mode gives you access to all characters, even if you don't own them. If you do own one, your progress carries over. Similar to Divergent Universe, if your owned character doesn't meet the gear minimum, it swaps to a default version.

You can't set up teams in advance; you recruit them during the game with Coins. Earn Coins from wins or other rewards. Manage your Coins carefully each round to build the best team for the boss.

On-field and Off-field Characters

Currency Wars uses teams of 10, unlike the standard 4-person teams in HSR. The battlefield splits into on-field and off-field areas. Characters are categorized as on-field, off-field, or both.

You can put any character anywhere, but their special skills only work in the right spot. For instance, Jade is off-field, so her Debt Collector ability activates there. Plus, on-field and off-field characters can synergize, like Jade’s Debt Collector with Herta on-field.

Bond Effects and Strategies

Besides regular synergies, Currency Wars adds Bond Effects and Strategies. Bonds are like factions from Zenless Zone Zero. Get enough characters with the same Bond, and you unlock a special skill. For example, the Xianzhou Bond has Qinque, Tingyun, Huohuo, Fugue, Fu Xuan, Yanqing, and Jing Yuan. Together, they summon the Lightning Lord to hit all enemies. More on Bonds below.

Strategies are buffs based on your team setup, which can boost Bond effects too. For instance, one might amp up AoE damage if you have several AoE characters.

Character Rarity and Cost

Instead of the usual 4-star and 5-star rarities, Currency Wars has its own color-based system. Characters are split into five colors, each with a different Coin cost to recruit. The colors are Gold, Purple, Blue, Green, and Grey, from highest to lowest rarity. Here is a cost breakdown for the character colors:

  • Gold: 5 Coins
  • Purple: 4 Coins
  • Blue: 3 Coins
  • Green: 2 Coins
  • Grey: 1 Coin

Gold characters start strong but don't grow much and cost more. Grey ones start weak but can develop a lot. Like, Herta is grey, and she gets better with each enemy defeated, potentially becoming a powerhouse if used early. You can't recruit Gold characters right away; you level up in battle to unlock them.

There's also star rarity. Characters start at 1-star. Recruiting duplicates ups the star level, improving their kit. Often, a 3-star Grey beats a 1-star Gold.

Gears

There's a Gears system too, where you equip items on characters for extra effects or stat boosts. It's like Relics, but more like support cards in card games.

How to Win in Currency Wars

To win, you fight Face Competitors. Each Currency Wars cycle has three of these bosses, similar to other modes. Clear their preliminary rounds to face them. Beat all three to win, earning more coins, ranking up, and getting rewards.
