A Devil May Cry game on mobile titled Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat was originally announced all the way back in December of 2017 by Yunchang Game – a relatively unknown Chinese developer. Since then, information regarding this game’s progress has been scant. However, following the release of Devil May Cry 5 on PC and consoles a few days ago, the developer has finally revealed several new pictures of its mobile project, which shed some light about what we can expect. Do note, though, that these are just “in-development game images”.
From what we know so far, Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat is claimed to feature combat true to the main series with limitless aerial combos, several weapons that players can switch between at will, and no fixed camera view.
Looking at the picture, it seems that the protagonist of Pinnacle of Combat is still going to be Dante, and he looks quite young, kind of similar to how he appeared in Devil May Cry 3. From a shot, we can see that his trusty sword Rebellion is already in its “Awakened” state (the crossguard on its hilt is already popped out to the sides). If you recall, the Rebellion only became awakened after drinking Dante’s own blood in his battle with his twin brother Vergil in Devil May Cry 3, suggesting that this game is going to take place after the events of DMC3. The twin swords Agni & Rudra – another weapon that he obtained in DMC3 – make a return here as well, further supporting this speculation.
Other familiar characters featured in the images are Lady and Vergil. However, if the game indeed takes place after DMC3, then by right Vergil should already have been trapped in Hell. It could be that he’s going to be a “bonus” character, kind of like DMC4: Special Edition. Another possibility is that Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat is simply a spinoff that’s unrelated to the story of the main series. Given that developer Yunchang Game is a pretty small studio, this game is most likely not going to be canon anyway, so it’s best not to think about it too much.
In any case, we can see that besides his signature katana Yamato, Vergil also wields some kind of fist weapons, but those gauntlets don’t look like Beowulf, so maybe he’s bringing something new to the table.
No launch schedule is currently available yet. All we know so far is that a test version will come out within this year, which could mean that we will not be seeing Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat until at least 2020. Stay tuned for more updates.
