Spike Chunsoft has pushed Danganronpa 2×2 from its planned 2026 window to early 2027. The expanded remake of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair will now arrive after more polishing time, but the team has also been refreshingly honest about another factor: they did not want to release near Grand Theft Auto VI.

Why the Delay Happened

Producer Shohei Sakakibara explained that development had been moving toward a 2026 launch, yet the studio decided to shift it. The extra months will help deliver the best possible experience, he said. At the same time, the team chose not to launch alongside “a certain AAA/AAAA title.”

When pressed on whether that title was GTA 6, series creator Kazutaka Kodaka laughed and made the admission that has since circulated widely: “I wouldn’t have time to make the game while playing GTA 6, so it was inevitable that we moved the release time.”

The comment landed with perfect timing. GTA 6 is expected to dominate the release calendar whenever it drops, and many publishers have already steered clear of its window. Few, however, have been this open about the personal upside. Kodaka essentially confirmed that the delay also clears space on his own schedule for Rockstar’s open-world epic.

What Players Can Expect

Danganronpa 2×2 itself is more than a simple remaster. Players can choose between an updated Original mode that retells the 2012 story with enhanced visuals and presentation, or the brand-new Slayhem mode. The latter features a completely different storyline with new victims, culprits, and tricks, while offering roughly 20 percent more content. Both modes are available from the start. The game also replaces the old side-scrolling map with a full 3D world map for clearer exploration of the island.

The title is still planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam (and Epic Games Store). A more precise early-2027 date will be shared later.

What to Do While Waiting

In the meantime, fans can take Kodaka’s advice: go play GTA 6 when it arrives. The Danganronpa team clearly intends to do the same.
