Elden Ring Nightreign is dropping soon, letting players roam the ever-changing Limveld solo or in groups of three. If you’re planning to team up with just one buddy, though, you’ll likely need to roll with a random third player.
In an IGN interview, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki explained why the game focuses on solo and three-player modes, admitting they didn’t prioritize duos.
"The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that," said Ishizaki. "As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it's at the core of Nightreign.
"Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I'm just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start," Ishizaki continued. "And so we did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed. So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well."
So, if you’re pairing up with your go-to gaming pal, get ready to let a stranger join the party. You might end up with someone who’s pretty solid at the game.
For solo players, Nightreign’s got you covered. Ishizaki mentioned the game tweaks its difficulty based on how many players are in a session, so going it alone shouldn’t feel impossible. You’ll need to hunt down self-revive options, which are built in for solo runs. And if you’re in a trio, you’re playing the game the way it was designed. Either way, an extra teammate might come in handy against Nightreign’s brutal bosses.
