Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation is a survival horror game. In the game, you are Ripley's daughter 15 years after what happened in the first Alien film. After discovering that a flight recorder that has documented Ripley's fate is hidden in a Seegson Corporation ship, you are sent to find her.

Your goal is not to shoot everything that moves. Encounters with a xenomorph will be brief and anxiety will overwhelm you as you try to outrun than the monstrous alien. Most of the game focuses on sneaking through narrow corridors and using tools to evade the creature, not defeat it.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Although almost all Star Wars games are bad, there are some good ones. Fallen Order is one of them. The game occurs between episode III and episode IV; more specifically, between episode III and the events of Star Wars Rebels.

In it, you are Cal Kestis, a Padawan Jedi. Throughout your adventure, you will travel to multiple planets, each with their own secrets, alternate paths, and optional boss battles.

Jurassic World Evolution

Jurassic World Evolution is the last thing one would expect from a Jurassic Park-based title. It is a simulator in which you manage a dinosaur park that covers five islands. Evolution includes the voices of Jeff Goldblum, Bryce Dallas Howard, and BD Wong, and focuses on three types of skill trees: science, entertainment, and security.

Although dinosaur park simulation is a bit of a weird genre, it works well here because it was developed by Frontier Developments, a studio that mastered the simulation genre.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Just like with Star Wars, there are many Lord of the Rings games and most are not good. But the two Middle-earth titles, which are Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, happen to be exceptional. In both titles, you play as Talion and you share your body with the elf prince Celebrimbor. Your goal is to stop Sauron.

Shadow of War is a prequel to the movies. In the game, you will have to face Sauron's army of orcs. As you defeat these orcs, others, increasingly powerful, will take their place.

GoldenEye 007

Launched in 1997 for the Nintendo 64, GoldenEye brought with it an era of split-screen shooting with players trying to eliminate themselves in an arena. Today GoldenEye does not offer the same feeling as it did in 1997, but its impact on the gaming industry is undeniable. You can find a remake version of the game available to download to your PC for free.

John Wick Hex

For the last 5 games based on movies on this list, this is a chronological strategy game in which time stands still so you can plan your next move. You choose where you want to move and what you want your movements to be, and then time progresses: it turns out that not even in a video game can you be as awesome as John Wick in real-time.

Hex features expertly created animations in neon-filled settings. While a triple-A studio probably could have made a more visceral John Wick experience, Hex is a good title offering a unique take on the franchise.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Knight of the Old Republic is proof that movie-based video games can offer depth and complexity. This title is set in the Old Republic, 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire took power. You are a Jedi on a multi-planet mission to overthrow Darth Malak.

Just like the titles that BioWare studio did before Knights of the Old Republic, combat is done in rounds and the d20 system is used to determine if an action was successful or not.

Mad Max

Mad Max is not based on any particular film in the series, although it came out shortly after the release of Fury Road. It is an open-world action and adventure game in the style of Assassin's Creed and Batman: Arkham Asylum. In it, you are Max Rockatansky, a highway officer in search of fuel for his V8 Interceptor.

Although Mad Max is not at the level of Arkham Asylum and Assassin's Creed, it does offer a decent experience. A core theme of the game is its vehicular combat. As you move through the moor you can find accessories for your vehicle, which make it stronger, faster, and more deadly.

Friday the 13th: The Game

Friday the 13th: The Game is an asymmetrical multiplayer game similar to Dead by Daylight. This eight-player online game pits seven Crystal Lake camp counselors against a menacing Jason Voorhees. The camp counselors win if they escape the map alive or if they survive until time runs out. Of course, Jason's goal is to kill as many as he can.

It is a simple concept that could get tiresome quickly. Fortunately, the Crystal Lake map is large and open, with multiple additional missions for camp counselors. Completing these missions will give them a better chance to survive, either by giving them an escape route or by helping to slow Jason down.

Blair Witch

Blair Witch came out of nowhere when it was announced and released all by itself in 2019. In it, you are Ellis Lynch, a former police officer who joins a group looking for a lost child deep in the Black Hills forest of Burkittsville, Maryland. He is accompanied by his dog Bullet, a crucial element in defining the outcome of the game.

Overall, Blair Witch is an exploration game where you search through the forest and solve puzzles. But the most interesting aspect is Bullet. In addition to finding things and tracking odors, Bullet also determines your psychological state. You will have to keep it close during your search to avoid suffering from the horrors that surround you.
