The latest GTA 6 trailer gave GTA V a big push on the download charts for May, according to PlayStation’s latest data. Just like the first trailer, GTA VI Trailer 2 got more folks jumping back into GTA Online.
Meanwhile, in a wild twist, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 got bumped from its five-month streak as the most downloaded game on PlayStation. Let’s break down the latest charts for Rockstar’s titles and check out a new report on gaming habits.
GTA VI Trailer 2 Pumps Up GTA Online
PlayStation dropped their monthly charts last week, covering PS5, PS4, PSVR, and free-to-play game downloads for May. GTA V climbed to the 5th most downloaded game in the US and Canada, and 4th in Europe, up from 8th and 6th. Even without new DLC, the GTA VI Trailer 2 hype helped it hold strong against heavy hitters like Forza Horizon 5, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and Elden Ring Nightreign.
The PS4 charts tell a similar story. GTA V hit 5th in North America and 6th in Europe, jumping from 11th and 8th. That’s an even bigger leap than on PS5.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Loses Its Throne
After dominating the PS4 charts in the US and Canada for five straight months, Red Dead Redemption 2 got knocked down to second place. The surprise champ? Star Wars Battlefront II, a game from a year before RDR2, which saw a massive comeback in May thanks to fans hyping it up. It claimed the top spot in both the US/Canada and Europe, leaving RDR2 in the dust. With Battlefront II still going strong into early June, Red Dead 2 might not reclaim first place anytime soon. We’ll see next month.
New Report on Gaming Habits
Analytics firm Ampere dropped a report through The Game Business with some cool insights into player habits, including GTA Online fans. The report noted GTA V in a section about Minecraft and its recent movie. The film’s success boosted Minecraft to 20 million monthly active users in April, the highest since June 2022. About 11% of GTA Online players also played Minecraft that month, making it the fourth most common overlap, behind Fortnite, Roblox, and Call of Duty.
The report also showed a 19% drop in average gaming hours for new and returning Minecraft players who also play GTA Online on PlayStation in April, one of the bigger declines on the list.
