Even when GTA 6 drops, GTA V is still gonna be a big deal on Twitch, according to Twitch’s CEO. In a recent chat, Dan Clancy, the guy running Twitch, talked about GTA 6 and why GTA V isn’t going anywhere on the streaming scene.
During a talk at The Game Business Live this month, Clancy broke down why GTA V is such a hit on Twitch. GTA RP (roleplay) has been absolutely massive, pulling in billions of hours watched over the last few years. It’s a huge part of GTA’s appeal, and it’s cool to hear what the head of Twitch, where most GTA RP streams happen, thinks about it.
Of course, Clancy’s pumped for GTA 6 but bummed it got pushed back from Fall 2025 to May 2026, like the rest of us. Twitch shared back in April that GTA V racked up over 1.4 billion hours of watch time, making it the top-watched game on the platform in 2024. GTA 6 would probably boost those numbers even more, maybe to crazy levels, but Twitch won’t see that growth this year.
What’s So Great About GTA
Clancy says GTA stands out because it’s not like other top games (think League of Legends or Call of Duty). He explains, “With something like League of Legends, if you don’t play it, it’s tough to watch for hours if you’re not into it.” But GTA’s roleplay scene is the real hook, even though it’s not an official part of the game. Clancy puts it like this: “It’s basically turned into improv theater. I’ve said before that some theater school should teach a class on GTA roleplay, where students act out characters. You get these wild stories that come up naturally because streamers are playing roles in this virtual world. Drama pops off, stories build, and it’s real people behind it, not AI.”
GTA VI Without RP At Launch
Clancy thinks the GTA 6 launch will feel “a bit weird” since it’s only hitting consoles at first. GTA RP runs through FiveM on PC, so it won’t be part of the initial release. Based on how Rockstar usually rolls, the PC version might not drop for 6 to 18 months after the console launch.

This Will Let GTA V Continue To Thrive
Since GTA 6 won’t be on PC right away, Clancy says GTA V will keep ruling Twitch. Streamers and fans will stick with GTA V for their RP fix instead of jumping to GTA 6. He explains, “It’s gonna be weird because when GTA 6 comes out, it’s console-only at first, so roleplay won’t be there. GTA V will still be a big deal on Twitch even while everyone’s playing GTA 6 for a bit. It’ll be interesting to see how the GTA scene plays out when 6 launches, and then later when PC and roleplay get added.”
He’s bummed about the GTA 6 delay like everyone else but notes that since it won’t have PC or a new online mode at launch, GTA V is likely to stay the king of Twitch for a good while.
