After a bunch of fighting and digging, players might want a calmer activity in Minecraft. It's easy to find water, and where there's water, there are frogs. Breeding these cute creatures is a fun way to chill out. While it might be quite simple, not all players know all the details. Before you go frog-hunting, you'll need some tips. Keep reading for everything you need to know about frogs as well as how to breed frogs in Minecraft.

About Frogs in Minecraft

A frog is a friendly creature you can find in swamps. Frogs munch on little slimes and magma cubes. When a frog eats a magma cube, it can create one of three Froglights, and the type of Froglight depends on the kind of frog.

Frog Types

There are three types of frogs in Minecraft, and while they all act the same way, the only difference between them is where they come from. These types are:

  • Temperate
  • Cold
  • Warm

The names of these frogs give a clue about where they come from. If you let a tadpole grow in the Badlands, it becomes a Warm Frog. On the other hand, tadpoles maturing in a Frozen River become Cold Frogs.

There are three types of frogs in Minecraft.

Usually, frogs are found in the Swamp and Mangrove Swamp biomes. To catch frogs, you'll need to visit either of these environments. Frogs from Swamps are Temperate, while those from Mangrove Swamps are Warm.

Frog Behaviors in Minecraft

When you first come across frogs, you'll see them either in the water or on land. They move around by hopping on the ground, much like real frogs. What's interesting is that they can jump pretty high (up to eight blocks), and take less damage when they fall compared to most other creatures in Minecraft.

Frogs like hopping on lily pads and big dripleaves, so you'll often find them near bodies of water. If they see a higher block, they'll try to jump onto it, except for Honey Blocks, those are a no-go for them.

In water, frogs swim and move faster, staying on the water's surface. They don't usually dive down unless you lure them with Slimeballs. And since they're amphibians, they don't drown in Minecraft.

When tamed and guided around, frogs can be quite useful. They attack certain mobs by pulling them into their mouths and making them disappear. They're particularly good against small Slimes, dropping even more Slimeballs after dealing with them.

Apart from fighting mobs, frogs have another handy ability, they create Froglight. This special substance only drops when a frog tries to digest small magma cubes. Each Froglight cube emits the highest possible light level, 15, making it very bright.

The type of frog also determines the color of the Froglight it drops. Here's a breakdown:

  • Warm Frogs yield Pearlescent Froglight, emitting a pinkish glow.
  • Temperate Frogs produce Ochre Froglight, glowing yellow.
  • Cold Frogs release Verdant Froglight, which glows green.

If you want specific colors, you can use buckets to move tadpoles to particular biomes and let them grow. Since they become one of three types based on their environment, getting the Froglight colors you desire is quite achievable.

Portable Warriors

Minecraft frogs aren't just skilled at taking on smaller mobs; they're also the exclusive source of Froglight blocks. Breeding them adds an exciting element, offering three types to pick from. The good news is that they don't have any special conditions or requirements for reproduction.

How to Breed Frogs in Minecraft

To attract frogs in Minecraft, players need Slimeballs, and there are two ways to obtain them: either by defeating Slimes or by causing Pandas to sneeze them out, though the first method is more dependable. Two Slimeballs are adequate for breeding two frogs at one time.

When you hold Slimeballs in your hand, all frogs within six blocks will follow you, indicating they are ready to reproduce. Follow these steps for breeding frogs:

1. Gather some Slimeballs.
2. Locate frogs in your overworld.
3. Feed two frogs a Slimeball each to put them in Love Mode.
4. Wait for one of the frogs to become pregnant.
5. The frog will seek out a water block and lay Frogspawn.
6. Wait for the Frogspawn to hatch into tadpoles.
7. Wait or feed the tadpoles more Slimeballs to accelerate their growth.

Hatching Frogspawn can take between two and 20 minutes, but it will always happen. Interestingly, the game treats tadpoles as an entirely separate mob from frogs until they grow up.

Breeding frogs in Minecraft: Pocket Edition follows the same requirements as other platforms. The primary distinction lies in unique biomes exclusive to Pocket Edition, which is based on Bedrock. Here's the process for breeding frogs in Pocket Edition:

1. Obtain Slimeballs from Slimes or Pandas.
2. Locate at least two frogs in the game.
3. Equip the Slimeballs and tap on the frogs.
4. Wait for the frogs to breed, and one of them will become pregnant.
5. Let the frog lay Frogspawn.
6. Allow the Frogspawn to hatch into tadpoles. And you can either let the tadpoles grow naturally or feed them more Slimeballs.
