There’s a new kind of ghast in Minecraft called the happy ghast! Mojang showed it off during the first Minecraft Live of 2025, and it’s coming in the summer update.
Right now, you can only try this in the beta version (1.21.80.25). It’ll be out for everyone in the summer update.
Steps to ride the happy ghast in Minecraft
First, you need a dried ghast block. This is a special block that turns into a happy ghast later. You can find it in the Nether, in the Soul Sand Valley near fossils, or make it yourself with eight ghast tears and a bone block. You’ll need this block because it’s the only way to get a happy ghast.
Once you’ve got the dried ghast block, bring it to the Overworld and dunk it in water.
The block’s face will slowly go from looking sad to smiling. After 20 minutes, it’ll turn into a super cute little ghastling, which is basically a baby happy ghast. The ghastling needs another 20 minutes to grow up into a full happy ghast, but you can make it grow faster by giving it snowballs. So, make sure you’ve got a bunch of snowballs ready to feed it. Before you know it, it’ll turn into a happy ghast!
Next, feed the ghastling some snowballs to help it grow up into a big happy ghast. When it’s all grown, you can make a harness to ride it.
To make a harness, grab three pieces of leather, two glass blocks, and one wool block. The wool’s color decides what color your harness will be.
After you’ve made the harness, toss a snowball to get the happy ghast’s attention, then put the harness on it. Now you can jump on and fly it around!
The happy ghast can carry up to four players at once, and the person in front steers it. It’s awesome for flying around the Overworld or building stuff way up high.
