Whence the Weeping is a major multi-region quest in Phantom Blade Zero that begins early but can only be completed much later in the game. It follows the mysterious sound of a woman weeping and ties into the story of The Chord. Completing it is important for unlocking the true ending. The quest progresses naturally alongside the main story, so do not worry if you cannot finish it right away in the first area.
Here is a step-by-step walkthrough of how to complete it.

Step 1: Start the Quest in Weeping Creek Valley
Shortly after arriving in Weeping Creek Valley during Chapter 2 (Against the Flow), you will hear a woman weeping in the distance. The quest is added to your log automatically.
Continue exploring until you find Yu'er near a waterfall or past The Lady's Rift Bell (after sliding down a chain in some paths). Speak to her and choose the dialogue option to ask about the weeping woman or the weeping sound. This gives the first clues and advances the quest. You cannot find the source yet, so continue with the main story through the rest of the valley.
Step 2: Progress Through Crimson Forest
As you move into the Crimson Forest (the second major region), you will hear the weeping again. Follow any navigation markers that appear.
After awakening in a cave during later progression in this area (around Chapter 4), head outside and travel east to trigger a cutscene with the Illusion of Lady Inanis. She provides more information about the source of the weeping.
Continue through the region, solving any related puzzles such as the weeping portals near Mirrorwood Depths if they appear (listen for the clearest weeping sound to choose the correct portal). Reach and defeat the final boss of Crimson Forest. This yields key story revelations and the Broken Illusory Pipa, an item needed later.
Step 3: Speak to Jewel in the Village of Lu

In the Village of Lu region, locate Jewel and exhaust her dialogue options about the weeping sound. She will speculate about The Chord and point you toward the northeast of Meigu Lake.
Step 4: Unlock Meigu Lake via Pangzhen
Progress through Pangzhen, the fourth major region. Defeat the main boss in the western part of the area (Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster). This grants a Phantom Edge that opens the northern path leading to Meigu Lake.
Once accessible, head to Meigu Lake.
Step 5: Complete the Illusory Pipa Quest
Before you can fully access the final area, you must repair the Illusory Pipa. This is a related side quest. Speak to Myst in the Order's underground tavern in Pangzhen. She needs three components:
- Illusory Pipa Head: Defeat the secret boss Dusk the Puppeteer in the Village of Lu (requires collecting Firefly's Memory Flowers to unlock the related area near the Temple of Blue Fireflies).
- Illusory Pipa Backplate: Progress through Mandate Encampment to the Training Grounds and defeat Yubi (No. 21 Swordfighter Puppet).
- Illusory Pipa Strings: Defeat Yan Qiansui the Zither Maiden in the ruined songhouse in southern Meigu Lake (requires collecting Yan'er's Memory Flowers).
Return the parts to Myst to restore the Illusory Pipa.
Step 6: Reach the Mountain of Imprisonment
In the northeastern side of Meigu Lake, go to the Weeping Mistgate. A supernatural mist blocks the path. Use the repaired Illusory Pipa to disperse the mist and open the way into the Mountain of Imprisonment region.
Step 7: Finish the Quest

Progress through the Mountain of Imprisonment. Reach the summit and defeat the final boss of the area, Huangxing the Kunlun Renegade. This rewards the Flying Guillotine Phantom Edge.
Use the Flying Guillotine on the mechanism in the boss room to open the floor and descend. In the lower area, interact with the source of the weeping to complete the quest and resolve the story of The Chord.
Rewards along the way include useful Phantom Edges and other items tied to the encounters. Because the quest spans much of the game, simply follow the main story markers and talk to relevant characters whenever weeping dialogue appears. You will complete it naturally once you reach the later regions and finish the Illusory Pipa requirements.
