As the world of Minecraft is huge, it can be pretty easy to lose the way back to your base, especially if you are a beginner. All Minecraft worlds are random, so even experience can't save you. However, there are a few tricks you could do to prevent this from happening. In this article, we are going to answer the question of how to not get lost in Minecraft.

1 - Build your base close to world spawn and use a compass

This allows you to use the compass to find your way back, as long as you are in the Overworld. Players can craft a compass with 4 iron ingots and 1 redstone dust, or they can just loot it from a cartographer's chest in a village.

The compass can also be attuned to a lodestone to point to it instead of the world spawn. The only situation in which the compass is not useful is when you are in the Nether, where compasses are disabled.

2 - Use Coordinates

Every location in the world of Minecraft has a set of coordinates. Players should note down the coordinates of important locations like the home base or spawned structures so that they can get back to them at any time.

Coordinates can be enabled from the world settings or the command /gamerule showCoordinates and appear in the top left corner of the screen. You can also press F3 to show the data menu for it in Java Edition. For the Bedrock edition, you need to go to settings and select the "Show Coordinates" option.

3 - Follow the "right hand rule"

When moving out, try to mark your route with some noticeable activity, such as placing a block, a torch, or striking the nearest tree with your tool. Just make sure that you make your mark on the right hand side of the road.

Afterward, when you need to get back to your original location, just go with those markers on your left side.

4 - Use maps

Making a map in Minecraft is a built-in method that allows you to keep track of areas. You can create maps of your area by combining a compass with 8 pieces of paper. Otherwise, you can use a cartography table. Activating a map will showcase an overview of the Minecraft world in the player's vicinity.

You can even mark down specific locations on a map by traveling there and place a banner. These banners will show up on the actual map.

5 - Build huge structures

On your base, you can just create a long tower that can be seen from afar. This allows you to explore the area surrounding the tower without having to worry about doing the above four methods. To get back, you can just look at the tower and navigate.

However, you need to have a good PC or device that can render the distant areas. Without that, you won't be able to see the structure.
