Minecraft’s next big update, set to drop soon after the April 16, 2025 announcement, is giving leashes a serious glow-up. Forget the old days of just dragging one mob around—leashes are about to become way more flexible and fun. Here’s a complete list of what’s coming.

Leash mechanic

You’ll be able to tie multiple mobs together, like a horse caravan, so they move as a group without you holding the rope. Want to do this? Just crouch while leashing, and the mobs will link up to each other instead of you. One catch: baby mobs still need to be leashed straight to you, no group chains for them.

Additionally, leashing isn’t just for mobs anymore. You can now tie mobs to boats, chest boats, or even fences. This opens up cool tricks, like sailing across a lake with your horse hitched to your boat or keeping your animals tied to a fence post while you sort out your inventory. It’s practical and makes moving stuff around way easier.

Another neat feature is that you can “borrow” leashes that aren’t yours by right-clicking, and if you’ve got shears, you can snip them off completely. This works for ghast harnesses too. But if someone else owns the leash, you’re out of luck—no cutting allowed. Keeps things fair, you know?

Limits

There are still some limits. Stretch a leash past 10 blocks, and it’ll snap, just like before. And no, you can’t lasso other players, so don’t get any funny ideas.

These leash upgrades are already playable in Java Edition snapshot 25w16a. Bedrock Edition folks, hang tight—beta and preview versions are coming soon. The whole point of this update is to make leashes more useful, whether you’re herding a bunch of cows, towing gear across water, or rigging up some sky-high transport with a ghast. It’s the kind of stuff that’ll let you get creative and make everyday tasks less of a hassle.

The update also vibes with the new Happy Ghast mob. You can leash mobs or even a chest boat to this floating buddy and cruise through the sky with your gear dangling below. It’s a wild way to travel or haul loot across the map.
