A Minecraft modpack is fun on its own. It gets much better when the same world is shared: one player builds a factory, another explores a dungeon, someone else farms and keeps everyone fed. The hard part is not finding a pack. The hard part is getting every client, every loader, and one living world to agree with each other.
Vanilla Realms will not save you here. Realms is built for official Minecraft, not for Forge, NeoForge, Fabric, or Quilt packs. If you want a private modded world with friends, you need a shared install and a shared host. The good news is that the workflow is now much simpler than it used to be.

The one rule that decides whether you play or argue
Everyone must run:
- the same Minecraft version
- the same mod loader (Forge, NeoForge, Fabric, or Quilt)
- the same pack version
- the same gameplay mods
Loaders do not mix. A NeoForge pack will not load on Fabric. A 1.21.1 pack will not join a 1.20.1 world. Client-only extras such as Sodium, Iris, or a minimap can differ. Anything that adds blocks, items, biomes, or game rules cannot.
Treat one person as pack captain. That person picks the exact download, writes down the version number, and tells everyone else to install that same listing. Do not let four people search the pack name separately and hope they land on the same build.
Start with a launcher, not a pile of jars
Do not hand-drop mods into a vanilla folder unless you enjoy missing-mod screens.
Prism Launcher is the strongest all-round client in 2026. It is lightweight, handles Java for you, and can install packs from both CurseForge and Modrinth. That matters because many packs live on one site and a few required extras live on the other.
CurseForge App is still the easiest path for packs that only exist there. Modrinth App is cleaner and faster when the pack is published there. FTB App is the right tool for official Feed The Beast packs.
Give the group one rule: everyone uses the same launcher if possible. Mixed launchers can work if the pack files match, but matching files is much easier when everyone clicks the same listing.
Give the game enough RAM on each PC. A light vanilla-plus pack can run in 4 to 6 GB. Kitchen-sink packs such as All the Mods 10 often want 8 to 12 GB on the client. Set max memory in the launcher, then leave some RAM for Windows or macOS.
Method 1: Invite friends into a singleplayer world
Best for: 2 to 4 friends, short sessions, no budget, a host who is always the one online.
Essential is the simplest modern option. Install the same pack for everyone, add Essential, then invite friends from inside the world. There is no port forwarding and no separate server jar. The world exists only while the host is in it, and performance is limited by the host PC and home upload speed.
Similar tools exist if your pack already includes them:
- e4mc style hosting, used by some multiplayer-focused packs
- e4steam, which tunnels through Steam friends instead of your public IP
These are excellent for a Saturday night. They are a poor long-term server. If the host logs off, the factory stops, the farm unloads, and nobody can sneak in after work.
Method 2: Same house, same Wi-Fi
Best for: sleepovers, LAN parties, two PCs in one apartment.
Open the world, pause, choose Open to LAN, and let friends on the same network join. Everyone still needs the identical pack. LAN is free and low-latency. It does not reach friends across town unless you add a tunnel mod or a VPN, and those extras add another thing that can break.
If everyone is already in the same room, this is still the fastest test of whether the pack even works together. Use it to prove the install before you pay for hosting.
Method 3: Run a dedicated server on a home PC
Best for: one person with a spare machine, decent upload, and patience.
Download the pack's server pack from CurseForge or Modrinth. That zip is not the same as the client instance. It contains the loader, server mods, and startup scripts. Accept the EULA, allocate RAM, then start the server jar or the included script.
Friends outside your house need a way in. That usually means port forwarding TCP 25565, a static hostname, and a public IP you are willing to share. You also need the host PC left on. Heavy packs will fight your own gameplay if the server and client share one machine.
This method teaches you how servers work. It is free in cash and expensive in time. Skip it if nobody in the group wants to own a router page and a crash log.
Method 4: Free public hosts
Best for: testing a pack, a tiny group, or a world you are not ready to pay for.
Aternos is the usual free answer. You get a real address and no monthly bill. You also get queues, sleep when nobody is online, and tight RAM. Light packs can be fine. All the Mods 10, RLCraft, or anything with hundreds of mods will stutter or fail to start.
Use free hosting to confirm the group likes the pack. Move off it once people start building machines that must stay loaded.
Method 5: Rent a modpack server
Best for: most friend groups that will play more than a couple of weekends.
A paid host gives you a panel, a one-click pack install, backups, DDoS protection, and a world that stays up when nobody is in Discord. You pick RAM and a location close to the group, install the pack, whitelist your friends, and send the IP. Each player still installs the matching client pack and joins from Multiplayer.
Hosts that keep coming up for modpacks in 2026 include BisectHosting, Apex Hosting, Shockbyte, PebbleHost, and several newer Ryzen-focused panels. The brand matters less than three practical checks:
- One-click install for your exact pack, or easy upload of a server pack.
- Enough RAM for that pack, not the 2 GB plan that only works for vanilla.
- A datacenter near most of the group.

Minecraft still leans on single-thread speed. Extra RAM will not fix a weak CPU if the pack is full of tick-heavy machines.
Pick a pack the group will actually finish
A mismatched pack splits the server faster than a bad host. Choose the play style first.
- Better Minecraft (BMC5) if people want familiar survival with more biomes, structures, and quality-of-life tools.
- All the Mods 10 if the group has mixed tastes: tech, magic, storage, and exploration on one world.
- Cobblemon if the goal is catching, battling, and trading.
- Prominence II, DawnCraft, or similar RPG packs if you want a shared campaign instead of an endless sandbox.
- Create-focused packs if your friends like building machines together.
Kitchen-sink packs last longer with mixed groups because nobody is forced into one progression tree. RPG packs last longer when people show up for the same quest line. Expert packs last only if everyone enjoys spreadsheets.
Look for a published server pack before you commit. If the author never ships server files, someone in your group will spend a night deleting client-only mods by hand.
A setup checklist that prevents the usual crash week
- Agree on pack name, loader, Minecraft version, and exact pack version.
- Install that client instance on every PC and launch it once offline.
- Confirm everyone can create a new singleplayer world.
- Stand up the server from official server files or a host's one-click installer.
- Match Java versions. Many current packs want Java 21. An old Java 8 install will fail in confusing ways.
- Whitelist accounts before you post the IP in a public chat.
- Add Simple Voice Chat or a similar proximity voice mod only after the pack boots cleanly. Voice uses its own UDP port, so open that port if you self-host.
- Make a backup the first night, then keep automatic backups on a host panel.
Update as a group. One player clicking update while the server stays on last week's build is the classic way to lock people out.
When something fails, check these first
"Missing mods" or instant disconnect. Someone installed the wrong pack version, added extra gameplay mods, or used a different loader.
Everyone lags except in the spawn chunk. The pack needs more RAM, fewer view-distance chunks, or a stronger host CPU.
Only remote friends time out. The host's upload is too weak for Essential or home hosting. Rent a server closer to the group.
The server starts, then dies during world gen. First launch of a huge pack can take several minutes and a lot of memory. Do not assume a crash until the log actually prints one.
Voice works in Discord but not in game. The voice mod is missing on a client, or the extra voice port is closed.
What to choose, in plain terms
- Same couch: LAN.
- Two or three friends, no money, host always online: Essential or a similar invite mod.
- Weekly sessions and a world you care about: paid hosting with a one-click pack.
- You enjoy sysadmin work and already have a spare box: self-host.
For most groups the winning path is boring on purpose. Pick one popular pack, install it through Prism or CurseForge, rent enough RAM, whitelist your friends, and refuse to tinker until the first week of play is stable. The pack is supposed to be the adventure. The server setup should not be.
