Minecraft Snapshot 25w31a, released July 29, 2025, brings copper-focused features and decorative blocks to Java Edition. Here’s the quick scoop on the copper golem, copper chest, shelf block, and more.

Copper Golem

The copper golem is a new mob for inventory management, crafted by placing a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern on a copper block (any oxidation stage, waxed or not). The block becomes a copper chest on spawn.
  • Grabs up to 16 items from a copper chest and sorts them into wooden or trapped chests (32 blocks horizontal, 8 vertical).
  • Waits 7 seconds if no chest fits, then retries.
  • Oxidation occurs unless waxed; fully oxidized golems turn into a Copper Golem Statue Block, dropping items and freezing.
  • Use an axe on an unoxidized, unwaxed statue to revive it with its item.
  • Click with an empty hand to grab its item.

Copper Chest

Crafted automatically when a copper golem spawns or made with a chest and copper ingots, the copper chest matches the block’s oxidation state.

  • Main pickup point for golems, but they can sort into regular or trapped chests.
  • Forms a double chest if placed next to another chest without sneaking.

Shelf Block

The shelf block, crafted from six matching stripped logs, stems, or bamboo (yields six), holds three item stacks, displayed like an item frame.
  • Click to swap items with a slot.
  • Redstone power changes its texture; up to three connected shelves swap with 3, 6, or 9 hotbar slots for automation.

Other Copper Features

New copper equipment—tools, weapons, armor, and horse armor—sits between stone and iron.

  • Tools: More durable than stone, slower than iron, high enchantability.
  • Armor: Stronger than leather, weaker than iron, no oxidation.
  • Lightning rods now oxidize but can be waxed.

Technical Changes

  • Spawn chunks tweaked to save memory; portals and other chunk-loading methods improved for farms.
  • F3 debug screen now toggles item visibility (always, with debug, or off).
  • Bug fixes: Textures for chests, shulker boxes, beds, signs, pots, banners, shields, biome tags, and horse/camel mounting.
