Phantom Blade Zero locks out several optional bosses, side quests, and strong items if you advance past certain points without finishing them. Most risks sit early in the game. Check your journal before every major boss and complete available Tales first. New Game Plus resets quests if you miss something.
Critical early checkpoints include these:
- Before the Thieves’ Camp Bell: Free Quick Hand Zhang from his cage near the Trail of Cages. Finish Apprentice Healer by collecting three herbs and giving them to Yu’er at the Outpost.
- Before Jing Ye the Outlaw: Complete Apprentice Healer so you do not lose the Medicine Case and related rewards.
- Before Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents: Give Yu’er the Flesh Lily (obtained from Hua’s arena). Finish A Healer’s Mercy, Purge the Sect, Festering Secret, and Honor Among Thieves. Accept Secrets of the Baishan Sect. Speak to the frightened deserter after defeating Peng Meng for Boulderguard.
Defeating Bai Chilian closes several Tales and turns the Outpost and Thieves’ Camp hostile. Missing these steps costs items such as the Blessed Jade Pendant, Calming Gourd, Silent Wrap, and Feather Bow Phantom Edge.
Later missables to watch:
- In the Village of Lu, talk to Old Man Gen and agree to his request before the Pangzhen backstreet. Bring the Thief’s Manual and Prayer Beads before certain characters die. Collect all five of Mu Xiaokui’s ribbons before her fight to unlock a third phase, Fiend Saws, and related rewards.
- Spare Red the Mysterious Swordswoman at the Dovecote instead of killing her. Kill kneeling Mandate masters properly for Memory Flowers.
- Finish Secrets at the Heart of the Lake and the five Long Pillar trials before Leng Tu. Equip Blazing Edge as your main weapon for the Three-Faced Puppet fight.
Other useful early pickups include the Reflex Device (widens parry and perfect dodge windows) and various Phantom Edges tied to completed Tales. Focus on clearing available content in each region before crossing major bosses or one-way points. This keeps the strongest optional gear, extra boss phases, and trophy progress available throughout your run.
